I know that this BBC documentary has been discussed, but I thought it might be worth it's own thread to note that Michael David Murphy of http://2point8.whileseated.org/ pointed out that there are currently bitTorrent's for the first parts of Genius of Photography on http://www.mininova.org/. Actually, the first four parts have torrents posted on the website, you can do a simple search for "genius photography" and find them.
For those that don't know what a torrent is, it's basically (from what I understand) a file that points at the actual media files, each person that downloads the media is then added to the torrent, so that when a download is in progress it's divided among users to optimize the download speed. It works, more or less, like the Peer-to-Peer file sharing that was so popular for music at the beginning of this decade. In order to download the media, you have to have a BitTorrent Client (ie, BitTorrent capable browser). Wyzo, http://www.wyzo.com/downloads/, is a free BitTorrent capable browser available on their site in both Mac and PC that is so similar to FireFox it's scary. Once you download Wyzo, you just use it like any other browser, except when you visit a site like mininova, you can download the media files directly to your computer. The files themselves are MPG4, files that will play in QuickTime.
Now, yes, I agree that this is copyright infringement (or not exactly proper), and had BBC made this available in the U.S., I wouldn't be advocating this type of downloading, and would be more than happy to buy the series if it was available on DVD in the proper region coding, but it's not, that I'm aware of. So, I'm having some trouble justifying to myself downloading the series. It's up to you guys to do with what you want. I haven't watched any of the series yet, so I don't know if the quality or what not is very good, on that I can't comment. I just thought I might make it known that it's available if anyone wants to take advantage.
