Be quiet!

A lot of times it depends on when it was serviced last. My recently serviced M2 and my old M3 (also recently serviced) was quieter than the other M3 I owned earlier this year. However, my MP has been the quietest and smoothest of them all.

From my experience (handling about a dozen different M's) they're all basically the same and for the most part differences are pretty insignificant.

Leica people! From the M3 onward, please tell which Leica has the quietest shutter?

The M7 has the quietest shutter overall, with no escapement whine on the slow speeds due to electronic timing. All speeds are a soft thwap only. On the mechanical side, M4-P seems a bit quieter than the M6's I used to have. I can't comment on other models.

It all depends on the body, the place, resonance and a number of factors. When I tested my M6TTLs against my M3 in my studio, the M3 came off as the quietest. Oddly enough, I checked them in my living room and the M6TTLs won this time. Why? Beats me, but then, any Leica will be quieter than any SLR 🙄 , and that's the thing that counts.

No fancy tests here...just sitting around and clicking. My M2 is quieter than my now for sale TTL. My new MP is far quieter than the M2. I'm thinking it may due to damping caused by the MP's black finish. The MP has quickly become my baby.

Interesting....I have an a la carte in black chrome and I thought the finish was thick enough for some damping. In any event, it's pretty sweet....as much as I love the solid, heavy feel of my M2, the MP is a featherweight joy w/ a collapsible 50mm...

Experiencing extreme GAS, right now.
