Fascinating reading, thanks Donald. The illustrations jogged a memory of an exhibition of Russian typography, without arousing it properly. Now I'm trying to reconstruct the rooms and walk about in them looking for clues where it was. It's going to be a long night. Might just as well stay up at the computer.

I went to an exhibition of his work in Paris about 15 years ago - don't think it's the one you're recalling though.
I know we have some jokes about the USSR here but that article really reminded me of how creative and innovative the art scene was before Stalin stomped on it and what might have been if the country hadn't fallen under the heels of a tyrant.

The article indicates that Lissitski avoided the fate of others, he was productive until his death, and that it was possible for him to leave the USSR to study and work in Germany, then return and continue working.
I don't suppose the imperial secret police had their own camera factory - or did they?
