first, the original version, scanned on my epson 4490, stock holder, emulsion side up. notice the newtown ring straight down the middle.

this version was scanned emulsion side down so the new glass insert could flatten the neg strip. "print" flip-flopped in PP:

it definitely fixed that moire pattern/newton rings or whatever it was in the middle of the water.

do the negatives need go emulsion side down for this work? how are you feeling these days? be well.

It also seemed to help with shadows and highlights, too. Were the settings the same in both scans? Thanks for sharing that, Paul. I have a 4490, too, and have been considering the holder for my medium format scans.

I have just made some modifications to improve the holders that come with this scanner. I have added some strips of 'sticky-back' non-slip vinyl to the door that closes onto the negatives. It now holds the negatives much tighter, and flatter without the sag in the middle that must have caused the newton rings above. I have also raised the holder 0.2mm on the glass with some black paper, which happens to be my scanners sweet spot for the focus.
The betterscanning holders still look tempting though. I especially think the length wise arrangement of the film is more logical, as I could scan 6 6x7's in one batch. I may end up building a custom holder.

I have the Better Scanning negative holder for 6x6 and a glass insert. I am quite pleased with the results. I also like fluid scanning.

I looked at some anti-reflective glass (perhaps the same thing), which had a very fine etched texture. I was afraid that this could show up in the scan. Perhaps I should try some after all.
Do you use ICE with the museum glass?

I can't recommend the variable height holder and ANR inserts enough - dramatic difference and much easier 120 scanning.
