Being a photographer in the current global unrest regarding the 'T' word.

We have a snitch culture here in Denmark - but it is mainly centered around tax evasion - the government has even set up an anonymous web site where you can tell on your neighbors.

But it is legal to show your privates at the public beach...

There is no global unrest about terrorism. The unrest might be connected to the (political) culture and the state of its democracy (if there is one in that particular country).

Seeing this as a global phenomenon is like accepting, that this is the current "natural state" of society. It is not. There are countries dealing with much more serious problems or other countries, that are much more relaxed regarding terrorism. The limitations to personal freedom and acting as open society must never be accepted.

Politicians that try to spread mistrust and restrict the openness of a society are not our friends or protectors, they are destructive and thoughtless (because they try to gain personal influence by instrumenting fear).

Relax, go shooting and just refuse to accept the limitations to freedom and openness that some try to push by using fear as flimsy excuse. - I wanted to write "go take pictures" instead of "shoot" - see, where this attitude leads...? You start to restrict yourself, just to not attract too much attention...

I have encountered and read about several photographers here in the USA who were put on no-fly lists because some low-wage Barney Fife security guard at an oil refinery copied down the license plate number of the photographer's car and that number made it's way to a 'fusion center'.
Conclusion: Park car several blocks away from where the lazy security guards are likely to be found.

... one would have to think twice about walking around the streets in the USA ... just look at this thread

Not that terrorism isn't a real thread to public safety BUT
the attention it is getting in the new media is completely blown out of proportion bordering on hysterical ... not sure which side of the border though ;).
All the media attention gives the terrorists a platform to feel important, yeah they made it on page one and every TV station on the globe :bang:.

How many people die each year because of
- drug abuse (tobacco, alcohol, prescription medication)
- traffic accidents
- infections with multi-resistant bugs acquired in hospitals

Back to topic :
I once photographed a local water tower and two guys in a front yard were looking at me with obvious ??? on their face. So I just went over there and outing myself as a photography nut and showed them some of the shots, everything peachy and no one called the cops ;).

"T-word": Tomato? Testicle? Treacle? Tenax?

Who else is sick of being asked to guess words from their initials? Sure, it's clear once you've read the post -- but the header is the U-word.*

*Useless, in this case.

Cheers,

R.
I think Keith is referring to Tattoo's. Yea these tattooed photographers.:D

Sales of bullet-proof vests is up 40 percent.

Get yours before it's too late!

Not the terrorist I need one for. Murders & robberies are at an alarming rate around here. Man was just robbed & murdered in his front yard in the middle of the day.:(

Thank you Roger.

An entire thread, discussing T, without ever mentioning the T-word.
So this is what free speech has come to. We have freedom of speech, on condition that we don't use it. Great!

I am so happy and proud, to live in a time where ratting on your neighbour is a fine thing to do. The best of times! There are wonderful examples of the good things delation can do for a society : Rome under Sulla, Stalins purges and Germany in the thirties. Isn't it lovely, that we can adjust our behaviour to the possibility of being denounced by a concerned citizen? Clearly, this can only make us a better, more polite society. I propose we go all the way : put the denounced T's head on a stake, confiscate his/her goods, and split the proceeds with the informer. We would be so much happier if only we could clean our neighbourhoods, get rid of the riffraff. And have their expensive cameras fall in our laps. Yay!

Cheers

Not quite accurate Lukitas, check out post#12. I Just wasn't aware that I was being daring. I do find it hard to believe that anyone that uses the word "terrorist" in a conversation or article on the Internet is automatically suspected of being a terrorist. But I assume that's why almost no one is using it in this thread.
Is this concern geographic or global?

The G-word.

Doublepluscheers,

R.

I don't get it; spys (or the T word) use Minox cameras, real photographers use Pentax 6x7. The way digital is now nobody can know you are photographing if you don't want them to.
