Ok I'm failing - if you were using a M3 with both eyes open there is no end of space around the frame? My problem is unless I use both eyes I dont see all the frame, that is I have to use both eyes to see what is 'in' the corners.
The 28mm Leitz finder is nice, scratches my glasses and falls off the camera.
If I dont close my left eye it does not seem to make any difference to the photos, they are still bad... but I can see sufficient of the outer field of view to see what I'm going to lose, on a M2, if I keep both eyes open. I leave the 28mm finder at home.
With a contax II/Kiev I need the left eye open to see any detail in the landscapes I take.

P.S. I can feel sympathy with Magus, the depth of field display on late M2 and M3 slows me down a lot, they are nearly as bad as an exposure meter display.

I think I misread you there, Noel. It was only a few minutes ago I realised that of course you were talking about the M3 and a 50. Please ignore my previous ramblings.
On the other hand, I don't have a 28, so that problem doesn't arise.

M3 was my first Leica. Later came IIIf and M6. Love them all, but as I like to use 85-90mm lenses, M3 seems to be the automatic choice for that. It's easy to put m6 down and pick up M3, but not the other way around. That feel and VF of M3 are second to none.

Well, I wouldn't know about ZI, so if you send me yours 😉 - I'll try and see if it's all what people say it is. I'm willing to consider that VF on it can compete with M3, but feel......not so sure. Like I said - I'd have to try side by side to find out.

k-man, it is fabulous and i say that without prejudice.
i had the m3 and it made my beloved canon p vf pale in comparison but the simple and elegant finder of the zi is superlative.

HOLY WAR ON - My German M6 feels better to me than my old M3 SS. Nostalgia be darned, having a built in meter is really nice.
If I want to go meterless I still have a IIIc and a Kiev.

I use my M6 more often too, but for some applications M3 is better. As far as feel - m3 is deffinately smoother operating machine than M6 in my case. Not to say that M6 is a worse camera. If I had to pick just one - I'd have a very difficult time choosing. It's a good thing that I can keep both. At least my wife says so. 😉
