Bessa III, Tri-X at 1600

Had a great time doing this small project with the Bessa III. (All images except for the last one are the Bessa.)

I did test that too but the lack of nuances in the shadow conducted me to abandon this set up. I'm currently doing the same with Tmax 400 @ 1600 to see if it improves or not.

BTW your shots are brilliants.

Am I correct when I say that basketball court is on the Ave. of Americas in the West Village?

Try Ilford Delta 3200 if you want high speed and better shadow detail than pushed Tri-X. They make that film in 120 size, unlike Kodak Tmax 3200, which is 35mm only

@pstevenin - Thanks for the kind words. And you are right about shadow detail and Tri-X +2, but that's the look I was going for. With Tri-X pushed two stops you get from Zone III to II to I in a real hurry. But if you think about the theme of this project, it is just right. I also happen to like that look in general though and will continue to shoot with it.

@antonandreas - Thanks. I might do a v.2 of the project at a later time, but one month of shooting emptiness was enough for now! I actually have many shots I took but did not select for this project. I started out thinking I'd be doing loads of empty streets or empty subway stations, but that was just too pat and the photos were boring. So, I ultimately went with other ideas. I'm already working on a different project now with large format.

@chriscrawfordphoto - Also love Delta 3200 shot at speed and at 1600. A really great film.

I think you're right, by the way - it looks like the Cage just near the steps to the W 4th St station. There's also (or used to be) a court on Houston near 6th that resembles this.

@antonandreas, @planetjoe - The basketball court is in Chelsea.

@mudman - I take my film to Duggal and they soup it in whatever they use regularly. I am going to start doing my own development soon though, at least for roll film.

I've shot Tri-X rolls @400, 800 and 1600, Delta 3200 @ 3200 and 1600 and I'm currently doing the same with Tmax 400 @ 400, 800 & 1600

the last roll (TMY 400 @ 1600) is currently loaded in the Bessa III so I'll be able to do comparisons (based on my way of shooting)

Currently my tastes are :

1°) Delta 3200 @ 1600 (by far)
2°) TMY 400 @ 400
3°) TMX 400 @ 400
4°) TMY @ 800
5°) TMX @ 800
6°) Delta @ 3200
7°) TMX @ 1600. (I've got poor results, developped by a reference lab here in Paris). John just demonstrated that correctly exposed @ souped he got wonderful results.

Sorry to be only on the tech' side of it, but I do appreciate the philosophy behind John's project.

tonite I'll do some baroque concert shooting. I'll finish the TMAX 400 @ 1600 and grab some delta 3200 just in case (and my beloved M8+35 1.2 as a back up : 1600 pushed 2 stops is not bad at all, but that's an other story).

The regular lab here (pro oriented) do what necessary. The neg's are thin definetely, but the scans works beautifully (the set up is radically different from TriX but I let my Epson flat bed adjust automatically and everything is okay.
