Bessa L

That's right, just guess the distance! Or use a tape measure. Some in the past have used a length of string with knots at regular known intervals as a compact measuring tool. You can even arrange the same string to be a tension monopod to help steady slow shutter speeds.

Clearly, errors in guessing make a smaller problem with wide angle lenses, so these lenses are well-matched with the Bessa-L.

The Bessa L also requires an external viewfinder and they are not cheap. It is, however, a beauty of a camera for the current price. I have two of them and I love them. The pictures are as good as the lens as long as you have the distance right. There is a TTL meter.

True Kurt, but the CV Ultra-Wide Lenses all come with their viewfinders, so the extra cost for that item would not necessarily be incurred.

The CV 25/4 lens has incredible DOF:
with distance set at 3m and f4 DOF goes from under 2m til over 6m. At f8 this increases to under 1.5m til infinity. Your guestimates won't easily be far off.

I just took my Bessa L on a backpacking trip. I had no problems guessing the focusing distance. The 25/4.0 Skopar lens has clickstops on the focusing ring which can be helpful. Generally I set it to the last clickstop before infinity and start the aperature near f/16. I prefer "footstep measuring" to guage my distance on near subjects. It's always been reasonably accurate and the subject comes out sharp.

The only problems I've had with the 25mm Skopar are with depth of field. Sometimes it's more than I want, even wide open. But I keep using the lens and I'm getting better at it.

I'll see if I can post some examples from the camera in the Gallery tonight.

[EDIT] They're up!

CV 25/4 question

CV 25/4 question

Has anyone had any real experience with the CV 25/4?

I recently bought a small collection off of someone in large part because it was fairly reasonable and included a Nokton 50/1.5 that I had been looking to add. Part of the purchase was a Bessa L with a CV 25/4.

It's been a couple of weeks and I've yet to really use it or even decide whether to keep the camera and/or the lens.

Thoughts? Experiences?

It took a while to get used to the scale focussing the CV25/4.0, but I'm now considering it as one of my two favorites (together with a Hexanon 50/2).

Focussing is easy with the focus tab and the focus clicks at 1, 1.5 and 3 meters. It's so lightweight and compact that carrying it is no problem.

Pictures come out sharp and high contrast, up to the point of being a bit harsh, so flattering portaits (even disregarding the wide angle nature) are out of the question.

In my opinion it's definately a keeper.
