Bessa R arrived already!

That was quick! I called Photovillage.com on Monday around 4 pm CDT and ordered the chrome body, black 35 color skopar, and a case... when I came home today about 1 pm, it was sitting on my porch. Pretty quick from NY to Texas for all of 14 bucks shipping.
Also, I was quite impressed by the friendliness of the guys at Photovillage, I talked with both Rich and Dean (?). Really nice to deal with. Sometimes I'm nervous about NY camera shops. These guys were very easy going. I highly recommend them.
Anyway, back to the camera.... I have read every thread on this forum I could find about the R. I formed an expectation of what I would get (never having actually handled one). I am quite pleasantly surprised by what I see.

I expected the body to be lighter in weight than it is, it feels good in my hand. I was afraid it would be too light, but I like its heft.

The chrome doesn't at all look chintzy to me, I think it's beautiful.

AND NOW I KNOW what a bright finder is supposed to look like! Wow! All my Feds, Zorkis, my Kiev, my Retina, all look like I'm looking through a glass, darkly, compared to the Bessa. The only thing I have that is even close to the R is my ZI Contina III, and that's a VF instead of an RF. At Central Camera in Chicago, I was once blown away by the brightness and clarity of the finder on a Leica III, but it could not have been better than this.

Also, I had heard the back is flimsy, but that is not my impression.

I find it to be pretty quiet, but that could be due to the fact I have recently been shooting with my Zenit 212k SLR, which sounds like an M1 Garand when it trips.

My wife, who is left-eyed, did put a very noticable nose print on it, which took some cleaning to remove. Whatever that material is on the back, it doesn't tolerate nose oil very well.

And you know what? I think I might be cured of GAS for some time. I've bought four cameras new since Aug '03, an Olympus C5050 Zoom, Leica Digilux 2, Nikon N75, and now the Bessa R. Those four should about cover all of my shooting needs, along with my Iskra and Moskva 5 for MF. Oh yeah, the Holga and the Holgaroid were new, too.
I don't think I'll be going for anymore FSU stuff, and my wife is laughing hysterically while I type this.
But that's it. No more until something has to be upgraded, and that should be a while.
Unless of course, I become independently wealthy, then we'll talk about the M factor.
For now, I'm a satisfied man. For now.

Congratulations on the Bessa! I got the black bodied one and I'm very happy with it! Isn't that finder amazing? Clearly the best of all my RFs - the only other one that's close would be the Konica Auto S. Now I just have to figure out what lenses I need to go with it. 😱

Ben (sockeyed) sent me an Industar 26 2.8\52 and I just got back the priints. I used Fuji 400 Superia and I'm quite pleased with the results. I would like to get a good 50mm and a 35mm and maybe a 85/90mm for some portrait work - sure would like to afford some good glass. Been looking at Jupiters - trying to keep peace in the family!

Congrats and SALUT!

Enjoy The R. I just got a grip from Ray_G for mine. I think I needed it. The fingers in my right hand have been painful lately. The grip makes the camera more comfortable to hold. You may want to look into one.

Load up some 400c and go for a walk with the family.

I'm going to go with what I have from the FSU stuff--- Jupiter 8, I-61 L/D, I-50, and I-26. Someday I'll get a J-9, that's an 85mm, right?
Later, much later, maybe some Leica glass.
For now tho, I'll be using the CV 35 and the J8. We're opening our new soccer stadium on Saturday, FC Dallas vs. NY/NJ. Might be the perfect use of the wide angle.
I'll probably be shooting anything for a while, whether it moves or not.

400UC is exactly what I've got in there, ready to go.
I thought about the grip, but I bought the form-fitted case, so I don't think I can mount the grip now. At least the case solves the nose-print problem.

Congrats. You are right about Photo Village. It is a tiny high end store with very good service. Very nice people to deal with.

I just got mine as well from FrankS (thanks Frank!), and that's a pretty similar list of FSU glass except I have the I-22 instead of I-50. The I-26 seems to look better on the chrome/silver Bessa than the I-61, but I'll be trying them all out on the Bessa. I also already have the Leica 50/3.5, 35/3.5, 90/4 Elmars (all cheap btw, about the same cost as the CV 35 for all three 🙂 ) and the 50/2 Summar. Neither the 50/3.5 or 50/2 will collapse into the R, so don't try it. My I-22 won't collapse either, so before you try collapsing the I-50, make sure you have the Bessa on Bulb with the shutter and back open. Given the limited clearance, and it's not just the 2nd set of shutters that you have to worry about, it probably won't work.

As for a 90, my 90/4 Elmar was cheap, cheaper than what J9's have been going for, but it's quite well used. I don't know if the Bessa R with it's short rangefinder base can handle a 85/2. I have a J9 on my Kiev, which is a good fit, but makes it quite a heavy bundle.

Neither of my I-50s are collapsible, but thanks for the tip about the I-22. I have one of those on one of my Zorki 4s, which is a 50th anniversary commemorative body. It stays in the display case.
Wasn't aware the Elmars were so inexpensive, thanks for the tip, I'll be checking them out.

rover, did we visit photo villiage with our little group?
it's becoming a blur already...

i'm thinking that small shop, we took an elevator...
joe

Oh my god, you are bad.

Yes, the little shop we had to take the elevator to with the glass shelves of all incredibly beautiful stuff.

That was Photo Village. The one with the $125 Summar.

You should have heard some of the phone conversations with the nice lady that works there when I was looking for my first 50 Summicron. She is very nice, I had dealt with her before, but their prices on Summicrons was twice what others were charging. I had a better chance of getting her home phone number than I had at getting a break on their prices.

Congrtulations and enjoy !!

I got my black R & CV35 a couple of months ago, along with a nice black J8 from Fedka. It was amusing to read about the "nose print". My older daughter is also "left eyed" and had the same problem.

Have fun & enjoy.

I'm left eye'd and my hands tend to sweat quite a bit, so I'm quite used to wiping my camera and lenses all the time. I'll have to see how the Bessa holds up.
