looking for a normal lens for the bessa-r body that is on its way.
i understand fsu lenses can be hit-or-miss on perfectly matching the rangefinder on the bessa, althouh i will one or two.
might y'all recommend alternatives? the canon 50'1.8 comes highly recommended, but looks to be hard to find.
a 35mm might be close enough to normal ...

The Voigtlander 35mm Skopar is a great lens and very reasonably priced. I've had very good luck with FSU lenses on my Bessa R. Buying from somebody like fedka.com can remove a lot of the uncertainty. The focal standard may be slightly different, but I've never noticed it in my photos. Unless the lens is way out of spec, shift from the different standard is probably only noticeable at f/2.8 or smaller and distances under 2 meters. I use a Jupiter-8 or Jupiter-3 on my R all the time, and the results have always been good.

J-8 on a bessa works well, I used one on my old r2a with an adapter. There are some images in my gallery with this setup

thanks, bill. fedka says on his site the jup 8 is a good fit for the bessa ...

I love mine, a late-production black one. It's my go to 50 for the Bessa.

i'd try to find a 50mm 1.5 Nokton, it's LTM so it will work out fine, and 50mm is a very good focal length to start with. for around $350 you might find one, maybe even less.

screw mount old Leica lenses could be an option as well, maybe a Summitar, which is 50mm f2 and would collapse fine in the Bessa-R. those go for about $400, from what I've been seeing in the big auction site.

thanks, all. yuri told me in an e-mail the jupiter 8 is a good fit, especially the newish and new ones. very nice shot, bill ...

You went with the Bessa! Good for you.

I have an I-61 L/D that works great but needs a re-lube.

But I'd grab a J-8 if I shot more film.

thanks, jason. i'm watching a couple of color-skopars on ebay, but suspect they will wiggle well north of $200. if i had to decide today, i'd get yuri at fedka to pick out his best NOS jupiter 8 and pay the premium rather than gamble on an fsu way on over thre in eastern europe ...

lens for the bessa

lens for the bessa

what i liked using was a leica visoflex with a bellows attached and a 105mm el-nikkor, fun to play with for macro and still able to shoot at infinity, also just shooting with the 5cm f1.4 nikkor. great for low light hand held shooting.

Buy a Leica to T mount adapter and then throw an old Instamatic lens into it. Works great.

Here is one from that setup:
