Bessa r2a Advance lever ....

Sometimes, the adv lever of my Bessa r2a stucks... and no possibility to release the shutter... fresh batteries.

My only resort is to free take up spool with the button in the base plate... and try to complete the rewind.

It does not always happen...but it already made me ditch some would-have-been-nice pics.

Is this somehow related to a high tension in the film tape inside the cannister ...?

after i load it, I advance 2 shots, and tension it with the rewind know... Might it be related to this..?

Not just at the end of the roll? It certainly sounds like there's binding somewhere. My old Bessa R would only behave like this if the film ran out, then as you say push the rewind button.

Can you rewind? Why are you losing frames? If you can rewind you can at least save what you have already taken. If you can't rewind it argues strongly that film is binding in the canister.

What brand film? 36 or 24? Or are you bulk loading?

It happens in 24 cartriges ( sometimes ) and 36 ( more ofter ).

I generally manage to unlock it with small button in base plate, and rewind it... so as to save the pics...

It happens randomly, not necessarily in the end of the roll...

I am concerned that by forcing it i may damage the advance mechanism...

And i do not do rapid shooting at slow shutte speeds ( although i have the trigger winder fitted to my r2a ) :/

Should i send it for service...?

Planning to buy an R3m... full mechanical may seem more rugged...

I don't know whether your problem will be the film canister or the wind lever. Service may help if it's the camera, not if it's related to tightening the film. The 'm' versions are the same advance as the 'a's, it's the shutters that are different.

Any different if using trigger winder vs thumb lever?

Not really, when it stucks it stucks big-time... no trigger winder or thumb lever will unlock it.

I have to depress the rewind lock, then advance, shoot in blank so as not to spoil the frame, advance again, and shoot.

:bang: For what it is worth, this has occasionally happened to me. I notice that you have the "A" as opposed to the "M" R2. When this happens to me with the same version of the camera, I have inadvertently covered the lens when I depress the shutter release, so that the "Auto" function of the shutter release has not completely cycled. In other words the shutter is still open and exposing the film and the film advance lever is locked. Now the shutter speed is far slower than my thumb trying to advance the film lever. When I wait about 30 seconds the shutter "finishes" its exposure, closes and releases the film advance lock mechanism and then I can advance the film. Not too sure if this IS your issue but I thought that it may help...... best of luck.

Rapid shooting also seems to jam Bessa shutters. Possibly the double shutter design needs a split second more to reset.
