Which is the most compact film camera with the best autofocus?

I look for a camera like the Contax G series with 45mm-50mm lens.

A flash shoe is required.

Of course the Contax is fine, but it has too many features I dont need. The camera should be simple and low in weight.

Another vote for the Hexar, but it's 35mm so may be wider than what you're looking for.
The lens is wonderful, and it can autofocus in the dark. The black version has that great silent mode. It's also small, light, and unassuming. The camera's only problem is its 1/250th max shutter speed. You'll need an ND filter if you want to shoot wide open in the sun.

Unfortunately, you have to work with what exists.

The Contax.

A Nikon N80 is pretty compact and you get to choose the lens. AND it's much cheaper than the Contax.

If you go SLR, the Minolta Dynax 5 (a.k.a. Maxxum 5 in the USA) is the smallest SLR you can get, add a Minolta 50/1.7 and you're set.

How is the Autofocus of a Contax TVS compared to the G2?

Ofcourse, I love the idea of using the G2, but its too heavy in weight and features, for my needs.

I realy like the TVS, but what about shutterlag and AF speed/accuracy?

Tobi

PS: I have used the Hexar AF, its very nice, but too wide.

So SLRs are out of the running? AF, hot shoe, normal lens, simple operation, lightweight. Besides the G2, which doesn't quite fit the bill, is there such a camera that exists?

If the Hexar AF and Contax G2/45mm won't work for you… it's SLR or nothing.
All the remaining P+S models are 35mm or wider. The Contax T2/T3 are 38mm but really what is the difference?
I use a Hexar AF and could not be happier. For 50mm I'm preferring manual/mechanical SLR's like the OM series at this point. I may even sell out of M mount completely as it's getting clunky for me.
In your case were 50mm is a must…. I would look at the Nikon f100 with a 50mm Nikkor or Contax N1 with 50mm planar.
Otherwise pick up a Hexar AF and be happy :)

Cheers!

Or just get closer. Or crop a little.
If you open the search criteria to something like the wee OM-1, you get 50mm lenses in a variety of flavors. Fast. Faster. Close focusing. Closer focusing.

The OM-1(n) measures just 136mm x 83mm x 81mm and weighs only 680g, with the standard 50mm f1.8 Zuiko lens. With a Zuiko 50mm f/1.8 standard lens, it measures around 80mm from front to back. A fast speed f/1.2 lens adds 16 mm extension to 97 mm, while a f/1.4 provides roughly an intermediate 85mm. Olympus Optical Co. claimed a reduction of 35 per cent in volume compared with the average SLR and a similar reduction in weight.

Tiny it is. oops. Not autofocus. Sorry.
