I'd be waiting for Photokina, see what arrives. If nothing pops up then, get the X100 or whatever.

Leica X2 is the obvious choice, with your criteria.

Forgot to mention the GXR-M has no AA filter, just like the M9

Other than the obvious M8/M8.2, I 'd also have to suggest the GXR-M. I think these are the best alternatives to the M9 if you want to shoot M glass. I also consider a film M to be a compliment to my M9. The choice of which alternative simply depends on circumstances - the GXR offers versatility and high IQ (and lack of AA).
I've also now taken to pretty much always having an RX100 with me having sworn off all compacts in the past.

I had a NEX 7 and got color shifts with my Summicron, whites had blue in them. So now I have the E-M5 and no issues yet.

MP is about as good as you can get with an M9. So. How is the x1?
Fuji X100 for sure.

The best camera is one that still works!
I hate to say it ... but an M Monochrom obviously!

GXR-M if you want to use the M-lenses and like a bit of tele-action. It is also more quiet, smaller and more discreet. The image quality compares very favourably with the M9 and it retains the unique signature look of each lens. It's a good backup and second camera to a M9, and makes a super camera in its own right.
X100 if you want a rangefinder style body, excellent image quality and autofocus. I love mine.
But if you want something that complements the M9 rather than performing similar duties, I've become very fond of the EM-5. It does everything that the M9 can't, like good high ISO, decent quality video, autofocus, focus closer than 70cm, costs much less money, and is weatherproofed. Get a lens like the Pana 12-35 and you have 24-70mm focal length range in a weatherproofed package.
There are even m43-M adapters which will allow you to mount M lenses on the EM-5. When I get the 12-35, the EM-5 will be one half of my walkaround setup, and the M9, X100 or GXR will be the other, depending on what I want at the time.

I guess it all depends on what you expect from the "companion"? I've recently gone through the process (from Olympus OMD to Sony RX100). To sum up my experience: I don't ever want to have to choose between M9 and another camera. It's no contest because I would always choose the M9 if it's able. That's makes Sony RX100 the winner because it doesn't overlap with the M9.
I wrote a blog post on my reasons, if you care to read more:

an M2 and M3! really, keep your glass, suck up the developing costs (or do it yourself), and when you sell the bodies they'll be worth as much or more than when you got them which helps to offset what you spend on film. it's the only way i've found. i do a m9 and d800, then an m2 or m3, or back from there it's an XA2.

Whatever camera your companions are using.
M9 + insurance + friends with another camera.
Why choose a small digital M9 over a dSLR if you are then going to carry another camera to "complement" the M9?
