Best degreaser?

We used to use Trichloroethylene (TCE) and 1,1,1-trichloroethane in industry in the 80's/90's. I believe its use has been phased out for the most part. I'd stay away :)

Ethanol may work for some stuff, but don't assume it's safe for everything. It does attack acrylics AFAIK.
I'll reiterate that one shouldn't over-lubricate. Some parts shouldn't be lubricated at all, like the shutter blades (although some advocate for dry lubricants on them). If you open an old service manual, you'll see that they advise several different lubricants for different parts. One may get away with just two, a thin oil and a grease, as I have so far, but it's probably not ideal wrt long-term wear.

Any opinions about using silicone oil ??
I tried it a couple of times and it seems to do the job (so far...)
It lubricates well but it's a complete b---- to remove from where it shouldn't be! Soap and detergent won't touch it, nor will most common solvents.

Your really don't want it near your shutter! Keep it for those purposes it's meant for...

I have only cleaned a couple of Ibsor shutters. The first one I cleaned with lighter fluid. It just wouldn't clean up enough and the shutter continued to slow down. Oh, did I mention that I used a very small dab of white lithium? So, another clean, this time by also removing the blades and the circular part that moves them (I forget its name). Then smaller dabs of the lithium grease and a gentle rubbing of that to spread it our and/or take part of it off.

Both work fine still. YMMV
