We depend on trains, and know there are drivers, or conductors, as here in Belgium, but who has ever seen them, or their controls, or what they see? In a sense this photograph still withholds the conductor himself, lending us his view and offering then only the back of his head and one controlling hand. There’s a wonderful mysterious genre in photography of people photographed from behind, even, or especially, just their heads. This is that too.
