best point and shot for $500 or less

Canon G10, now that the G11 is launched its on its way down the slippery slope of discount pricing. Adorama have them for 480

Just an FYI, but if you are looking for a Canon G10, you might shop around a bit... Many dealers are selling the G11 for $499.99, so picking up a G10 for $480 doesn't seem like a great deal. However, with some careful searching, I bet you could find a G10 for less than $480. Canon apparently did some work on the G11 (and the S90) to help with noise performance. I recently started using a S90, and I must say I'm impressed with the noise levels. These compacts are still nowhere CLOSE to the performance of a DSLR, even a Nikon D40, but the S90 has a very useable ISO 400, and even some of the higher ISOs could be useable (depending on the photographer's definition of "acceptable"). ISO 800 is the definite maximum for me... and luckily the f2.0 lens allows me to stay well below that most of the time. The S90 allows a lot of control, but it can be a bit "fiddly" in return. I suggest you try one out locally before you buy one.

Wish I could say more about the other cameras, but I'm not going to recommend something I've never used.

Not sure why you dismissed the LX3 given your reasoning for S90:
- f2.0 (lx3 is the only one with 24mm wide angle at that speed)
- HD (lx3 already supports 720p)

See this if it helps:

From image sample comparisons I've seen the Canon looks a little better IQ wise. I also like the fact that it's a little smaller, and we both have owned nothing but canons as far as digital in the past... I'm sure the LX3 is a fine camera as well.

Don't listen to the others. I am right and am the only person who posts on this forum who is never wrong. The camera will set you back $100-200, use the rest of the money to treat your better half to a dinner and a show.

Not only that... he's also right about the F30/31. For 2 to 3 times the money you can't match the Fuji F30/31 models. Also, if you are going to consider outstanding older cameras, don't overlook the Canon G6. Good megapixel range, f2.0 lens, 4X optical, RAW... yes RAW. Another camera, slightly more overlooked than the Fuji f30/31 models. Selling for around $200 to $250 when found.

O BTW NickTrop, I'm never wrong either, but you've been posting longer so you have righteous seniority.

Since you are already into film, you might want to consider one of these http://cgi.ebay.com/Leica-mini-poin...ViewItemQQptZFilm_Cameras?hash=item3efa1c6467 as long as you are comfortable you are getting good one. I have one and it takes nice photos. And it has the red dot if that is important. Otherwise, choose one of the many good digitals already mentioned.

Most important is what she is comfortable with, so she will use it. Maybe you should just take her to Best Buy and see what she likes.

well some very good news! I still would like to get her a new digital point and shoot, for those snapshots where digital still remains the convenient choice, you know family B day parties etc...

But we went to some galleries this Saturday, saw a Dorothea Lange Exhibit, and my wife was inspired. I had my Leica (film) with me as I normally do, and while I was driving she was holding it and asking questions about it. I was trying to explain to her how exposure works, and how to use the meter. She was telling me she wants to learn to use a film camera.

So that's pretty exciting. I just have to make sure I don't bombard her with too much info at once, as I tend to do... must take it slowly.

On sunday we went for a hike with the dogs through the woods and I let her carry the camera and take some snaps. She was having a great time, so hopefully she will continue to be enthusiastic about it.

Next potential post on the last one.....
