Hi there.

I'm looking for a good source for replacement camera leatherette. To date I've always used Aki-Asahi in Japan but the variety of colours seems somewhat limited.

What do you guys recommend? I notice that cameraleather.com haven't updated their site since 2014 and most of the links don't work so I take it they are no longer?

Cheers.

Surprisingly cameraleather.com still works once in a while. Sometimes what you order will turn up quickly, sometimes you have to contact him after paying then it will get sent, sometimes nothing happens and you have to get a refund through paypal.

Try https://hugostudio.com/ .

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Aki-Asahi's product. Have used him several times but I'm just looking for something a bit different for one of my cameras.

I'm not fussed about pre-cut (FYI it's a couple of Himatic 7s and I don't think anyone does pre-cut for those). Just after the leatherette with the glue / sticly stuff already on it.

On the other hand if I just got a sheet of leather, what kind of glue would be best to use?

Just had a very good experience with CameraLeather. I live in Bangkok; it took less than 3 weeks between the time the order was sent in till the goods were delivered. Pre-cut leatherette for a Hasselblad 503CW. Used "Griptac" leatherette. Pre-cut pieces with the glue on the back. Looks good and very practical. Sheets of this might be available at CameraLeather if you want to make your own cuts.

My last cameraleather precut order did not fit properly. Off in many places. And took forever.
Aki Asahi has been perfect but I understand wanting to have more options. hugo studio as one pointed out maybe a place to check.

My recommendation is Permatex Indian Head Gasket Shellac Compound (auto parts stores). Almost identical to the shellac used to attach leather on vintage cameras.

As for leather itself, if you use the old pieces as patterns you can get some nice thin leather at Tandy Leather.

As of March 23 2018 it looks like Cameraleather is trying to get back into business, so maybe things will improve. It's been awhile since I have recovered a number of bodies -a Leica M3 and some little rangefinders like Canon and Olympus. Product always fit and looked great. Hopefully he does have his act together again because he has some wonderful materials.
