All;

I have a Leica M8 with a 28mm F/2.8 ASPH Elmarit, and a 50mm F2 Summicron. For some reason, I purchased a 35mm F/2.5 Summarit as sort of a 'bridge' lens, which would on the M8, give me pretty much a normal lens at 47mm.

Now, I'm wondering if the 28mm will suffice with an effective 37mm, and the 50 as an effective 67mm so, was the 35 a waste of $$ ??
I can return it, and can pickup a 75mm Summarit (effective 100mm) for a good, three lens kit?

What are you guys doing for your M8-M8.2s?

Thanks, Brad

I have three lenses that I use the most:
CV 15mm f/4.4, CV 25mm f/4, and CV 35mm f/1.7
I also occasionally use two old Leica lenses: 50mm f/2 (LTM), and 90mm f/2.8.
All perform very well for my tastes and needs.

Just depends on your own shooting needs.
I use a 4-lens kit.
28/2.8 Hexanon
35/2 summicron
50/2 planar
75/1.8 CV

However, I'd never carry all of them at once. In fact, it would be rare that I'd have more than two at any time.

I end up with the 35/1.7 Ultron on the M8 quite a bit. I added a 28/2.8 Elmarit-M not long ago. So for now, 35-50-85 are the top 3 focal lengths, and 28-35-50-90-105 are on the Hit Parade.

I do not find that I am particularly adept at using wide lenses so a 35mm is plenty wide enough for me even considering its crop factor on an M8. In addition I use a 50 summicron, a 90mm tele elmarit and a 75mm f1.8 Voigtlander for no reason other than I like it. If I really want to go longer I have a nice black and chrome Canon screw mount 135mm that works pretty well with an adapter but this is not a regular addition.

I find 28mm a very good general-purpose lens on the M8, so I'd keep that. I don't find 75mm useful, so I don't use it, but I'm rather surprised to be using the 50mm quite a lot. Third, the 21mm with an external finder, as I like the 28 FOV on full frame. Sometimes, for simplicity, I'll substitute a 25 (with the 50) instead of the 21 and 28... since the M8 has framelines suitable for the 25. In your shoes I might take that 35 Summarit back, nice as it is.

Best three lens kit: your two eyes and a Nokton 35/1.2 :D

I use the 28 and 75 crons, with either the Nokton 35 or the ZM C Sonnar for speed, depending on what I'm going to shoot. I'd think the 75 summarit would be a better choice for your M8 lens kit than the 35, unless you want to go wider, rather than longer.

For a two lens kit I will take the 28 and the 50. For one lens kit, just the 35 Nokton.

Haven't found a wide yet for the M8. My uncoded/incorrectly flanged ZM 21/4.5 works fine, with Cornerfix.

Brad I thought I got that very nice M8.2 out of your hands already.....It will probably be a 35 as a mainstay and a 28 & 50 in the bag. 90 will be very difficult unless you put a magnifier in there.

Funnily enough, I find the 50/1.5 C-Sonnar the most useful lens on my M8, even though the 35/1.4 is standard for me on full-frame. For me, buying an M9 was more cost-effective than buying a 24/1.4. And I love the 135/2,8 on the M8. Not sure there are ANY guidelines!

Cheers,

R.

Hi Brad,
I'm holding a M8.2, and I think a 2 lens kit would suffice , i.e. a 28/35mm and a 50mm.
My current setup is a 35mm Summicron IV, and a 50mm Planar.

Had thought i 'needed' a 90mm to supplement the focal lengths, hence i got a 90mm Tele-elmarit, but found it hard to apply when i'm shooting....but that's just me.

been documenting my long trip with this triple: 15/4.5, 28/2.8, 75/2.5.

only thing that been wishing occasionally is standard view of 50mm lens, and, speed for night shots because M8 ISO performance is what it is (dont want to use above 640 only but on emergency). but all things considered, working travel kit, IMO.

If three lenses, the CV 15 f4.5, pre-asph Summilux 35, and Summilux 75. If adding a fourth, 135 2.8 Elmarit, a lens that didn't see much use on film Ms but has found a home with the M8.

my kit:
28mm elmarit asph (everyday lens)
50mm summilux pre-asph (portrait lens)

and i sometimes use
15mm heliar (mostly for fun)
90mm tele-elmarit (only use it for close-ups)

so my tip is 15-28-50 if you like wide, 28-50-90 if you like tele

To me, one always needs a 50mm equiv. I don't think you did the wrong thing. I'm not sure if one needs a 66mm equiv though. I do know one forum member who loves this length though.

In general, a 3-lens kit will have a wide, a normal and a long lens. Based on how you see the world, what FOV's meet your needs for a wide, normal and long? Then, identify the lenses that give you those FOV's and decide accordingly.

Myself, I prefer the FOV's from a 21mm, 35mm and 85mm lens (although, of late, I have been truly enjoying the FOV from a 75mm).
