Best Way to Glue the Rubber Grip Back On?

So after 15 months with the Bessa R2A the rubber grip on the back keeps peeling off.

I've tried sticking it back down with double sided tape but that was a waste of time. Then I tried to stick it down with Selleys Kwik Grip but that didn't work either.

Is there some awesome double sided tape or glue that will definitely stick it properly, and keep it stuck?

The rubber seems to have stretched a bit too as it now appears too big to fit into the recess on the body, a quick trim should fix that though, no biggie.

Any suggestions? And don't say buy a Leica as I already have one 😉

I had the same issue with my R-D1. In my case it was the rubber on the front that came loose. It also was stretched to be too large. I first removed all the gunk that is on the rubber and body. I used 'goo gone' (a glue remover) very sparingly, applying it with a q-tip, and then cleaning it with alcohol/hand sanitizer after. I ended up having to trim the rubber with an X-acto knife to make it fit as my first attempts at gluing failed. I tried various hobby glues, and silicone, but settled on generic contact cement. This seemed like the crude solution, but it seems to be holding. Apply it neatly and sparingly. This is harder than it seems.

I've had a hard time getting the stretched rubber on my R-D1 front to stay put, too. I think I used contact cement as suggested here a while ago. That didn't work. My current solution is a nice green leather Luigi half case. 🙂

Leica uses a glue whose product name is GOOEY. It costs $10k/ounce and is made from the sap of a Black Forest tree known only to gnomes.

I was repairing some ancient black camera covering on a Graflex RB D SLR last night and not much was working till I found a small tube of Scotch Super Strength Adhesive. I didn't even bother cleaning the old glue off, just squeezed out some glue under the peeling covering, held it down for less than a minute, and it locked right on. This morning all looks perfect so I would say it was a success.

i did a quick google on the Scotch Super Strength Adhesive but can't find much on its properties . Is that basically a super glue or does it stay flexible when set?

I bought a leather replacement covering from cameraleather.com - it looks better, offers better grip than the rubber and fits perfectly. I ordered the Levant Black ebossed leather.

Try either Bostik contact adhesive or, if that doesn't work, #6 screws.

The main leather book binder where I work has often suggested Gorilla Glue, which sets with water. I asked him what if I needed to get it off again. He didn't know. In his line of work, that is never needed. I have used it and it does work, at least on older folders I have used it on.

Plus one. I hate the rubber grips on the Bessa/R-D1. Anything from Cameraleather offers better grip and makes the body feel slimmer, easier to handle. Try Griptac.

I do not know what type of double stick tape you used, but I find that this works extremely well http://www.micro-tools.com/store/item_detail.aspx?ItemCode=9465PC. I've used it to stick down the rubber cover of my old RD1, and also used it to stick down the cover of a Leica II.

Rubber cement & I am not being sarcastic.

Clean off the old stuff, trim, apply to both rubber and camera, let it dry a bit, then stick together. Have some wide rubber bands ready and small bits of balsa wood so you can keep pressure on for as long as possible up to a week.

D200 Nikons do this stretch a peel too and that is how I fixed mine. Also the mounting plate of a Novoflex focusing rail set I get late 1960`s. Been giving me the peel problem for 30 years. 2 weeks under pressure and not a hint of an edge coming up.

Thanks for some more suggestions. i just found 3M have some handy products. i just found an industrial double sided tape for fixing glazing into curtain walling systems. i'll see if i can get me some of that 😉

Pliobond... a staple product at Ace Hardware. Works similar to contact cement. Works for me. apply both surfaced, let dry, stick together.
