Best way to scan with 3170?

I've gotten a new PC, dual core, 2 gig of ram and want to start scanning 6x9 C41 and B&W negs from my new-to-me Moskva 5. Any suggestions on how to get the best results from my venerable Epson 3170 Photo? All I've ever scanned with it is 35mm negs.

well, the computer itself has little to do with the scanning, other than speed, I guess, and even then it's more the interface (usb 1 vs 2) than anything else.

But...personally, I would start with something other than EpsonScan as the software. Take a look at either Silverfast or Vuescan, though both have steep learning curves. If you do stick to Epson Scan, put it in advanced mode and make sure that you keep an eye on what it is doing with your levels. It likes to clip them under the assumption that you like higher contrast.

You probably know that already, though, since you say it is your "venerable" one. So my next and in many ways more important recommendation is to get the film holder from Doug Fisher. http://www.betterscanning.com/

Thanks for the tip on the film holders. I'm going to order the adjustable model. Boy, this new PC coupled with CS2 in 48 bit mode sure brings out the capability of even the low end 3170 scanner.
