billingham 1.4...

Had it for almost 2 years. It was a good companion, but eventually sold it here on RFF. Could fit 5D2 with L-Bracket, 50L with hood normal position, 35L with hood normal position, l-758dr lightmeter, and accessories (filters, batteries, and memory cards) in the front pocket. It was nice, and compact, durable, adjustable dividers, and could fit a lot, but I was over shoulder bags after 7 years. I wanted full movement in both my arms and shoulders and not think about balance, so ended up replacing it with a ThinkTank Shapeshifter for travel, and a ThinkTank Skin Belt with Skin 50 modular component to hold spare lens and accessories when I walk around.

thanks...I'm still ok with shoulder bags...debating using my tt retro 7 or getting the 1.4...
I'm liking my L2 for a smaller load...like the retro 5 also for a smaller kit...

I haven't used or examined a 1.4, but I have been considering it. The one thing I've noticed is that it doesn't seem to have a handle or short carry strap. Is this correct? I know I tend to use this feature often on my Retro 5.

no carry strap...that is correct...it's a feature that I also like but am doing ok w/o it on the L2...
I ordered the 1.4 last night, it shipped this morning and might be at my place before me...I leave NYC early Friday morning...

the insert comes out of the 1.4 as opposed to the L2 and it is really flat/compact without it...I may try it that way for a bit...just to see.

as an aside...I saw some ona bags at the Leica store yesterday in the city...a bit too big for my liking though they had smaller ones as well...sorry cant remember the model names atm...

Can't wait to see what you think of this one, Joe...careful, Billinghams are addictive!;)

i believe that they are...I really like the think tanks also but they are a bit thick and heavy...the billinghams are much thinner...

I handled the 1.4 a while back but bought the Hadley Pro instead. However, I almost bought a used but like-new 1.4 a few months ago as the Hadley is a tight squeeze for my MF gear. My recollection is that the 1.4 had more width, a bit less padding, but similar easy access as the Hadley. Leica's fit nicely into the Hadleys but for slightly bulkier cameras, I'm sure you will enjoy the 1.4 - and what's not to like about Billingham's?

Steve

I like the f-stop line of billinghams because they don't have the faux buckles on them, just the leather straps with the brass buttons...I don't like buckles...
