Billingham Alice Quasi-Review

well...after much deliberation, i ordered the Billingham L2 (alice) bag to replace my well worn Domke FX5...it came today and i'm pretty pleased with it so far. i ordered the green one and was worried by some pics on the net of the bag that made the green look like a bright green...in actuality it's a nice deep forest type green with dark brown trim...

the build is top notch....how well it holds up is yet to be seen...i'm not particularly rough on my equipment but i use them a lot, so we'll see how the L2 holds up...

the L2 is simultaneously larger and smaller than the Fx5 if that is possible...it's exterior dimensions are about an inch or two larger but it's interior capacity is slightly larger but broken up in such a way that it carries a little less than the fx5....

the first thing i did was take out the thick bottom padding and replaced it with a strip of padding from a lowepro bag i have...then i replaced the thick dividers with some thinner domke bag...viola...more room

it comfortably holds two bodies with shortish lenses with room for 2 more lenses and about 20 rolls of film in the front cavity and a light meter, film lead retriever, filters, lens cloth and a small hard cover copy of The Mind's Eye in the back cavity...amazing!

interestingly, i can carry my nikon d100 with sigma 18-50 and an M body in the domke, but this combination doesn't quite fit in the billingham....the alice will hold, however, an M and a rolleiflex with WLF...rollei with a prism is just a little too tall for the bag to close...

the way i shoot, i usually always have one camera out at all times and either one or two bodies in the bag.... this way i could conceivably carry 3 cameras simultaneously with the bag...

it's easy and silent to open, a nice plus compared to the velcro of the domke...i've turned the bag upside down the above items loaded and gave it a few shakes and everything stayed put without spilling out of the top, despite the lack of zipper closure...

overall, i'm extremely pleased with the bag...it's probably the bag that best suits my shooting style....the real test, i suppose, will be during the next few weeks as i lug it around...i'll keep you all posted as to how it holds up...

Congratulations on getting the bag!

As a side-note, I found the thick Billingham padding to be very useful, especially last Friday: my bag slipped off the chair and landed on the floor top first. Thankfully the bag was closed (and remained so), and my CLE inside was undamaged.
