Bitten by the Massive Dev Chart iPhone App

I rely on this app, and follow it slavishly. However, it bit me yesterday.

I still have some of the out-of-date "Legacy Pro 400" film (which I guess is repackaged neopan). I was experimenting with Rodinal stand development with this film, and pretty happy with the results, but yesterday opted to do "real" development on 2 rolls.

For Rodinal 1:50, Legacy Pro 400 rated at 400, and 20°C, the app tells me a development time of 17:53. I said "really?", but trusted it.

The result was really over-developed film. I sort of like this look, but it was not what I was planning on. Consulting the on-line digitaltruth site, the development time for this combo is given as 11:00 !

Just a heads up to not always trust a computer program. Who knew?

I just put that film and developer into my iPhone app and it says 11:00 minutes flat.

Might be something else going on there.

I can't find any combination in my app that gives a time of 17:53 for anything.

And you did say the film is out of date. That may also have an effect on your results.

17:53 sounds weird to me too.

I just generated a "fresh" copy of the film/developer combo, and it says 11:00!

I also have the old copy, which says 17:53. I have gone into editing mode, do not see where or how I could have changed that - I don't see any way I could have even accidentally adjusted the developing time.

Well, the next time I see something strange like this, I will delete the film setup and start from scratch.

Shooting at 400, I give this combo 13 min and I like the way the film looks- but my chart says 11:00 minutes, too. One more voice adding to the "hmm- something's wrong" camp.

I haven't scanned yet, as the old film is really curled, and I am pressing it under a book - however, I think the negs are usable, in fact a lot of the frames look really interesting.

I don't think I ever updated the app.

I played with it some more, something definitely wrong with this version. The Time/Temp conversion was ON, and the temperature was set to 20 C. I turned this setting OFF and then back ON, and the time reset to 11:00.

The really curious thing is that there is no way to produce the wrong time (> 17min) again - the temp scale only goes down to 18C, and that increases the time to only 12:56.

Anyway, it is not fair for me to complain about the app when I failed to update it. I may have bumped against a bug that has long since been fixed.

Technology is fallable and these things sometimes slip in to programs. As long as something can be rescued from the negatives, that is probably all that is important!

Absolutely! Looking at the negs, I might like what I have anyway - there is a lot of contrast and detail, just very dark overall. I will try to scan tonight.

I will also update the app.
