Just joking... Some people seem to prefer them as they look good on a chrome camera & are 'stealthy' on black ones... I don't know this for sure with the J9, but the black J8s are newer and better reviewed by some...

I'm not sure, but I think the silver ones are aluminium, and are usually older - that means uncoated or single coated. The black ones seem to be newer and usually SC or maybe even MC. And also the black finish is nicer than raw aluminium.
But generally the older are cheaper, because they've been collecting dust for longer time

The Jupiter 9 is a very... very... nice lense, mine seems to be uncoated (but the last post says it is coated) however I don't see the purple or amber reflection you see on other Russian coated lenses. I use this lense on my Zorki-4, Fed-1 and the Zorki 4-K of my father. Another viewfinder (such as the universal turret finder, is neccesary) The filter tread is damaged, I hope to repair it somedays. It shows a very good contrast on color films.

Has anyone compared it to the voigltander 75? ive nver heard anything bad about the 75. I have one for my pentax SLR and its lovely.

When you use a new lens, you have to check if it works with your rangefinder correctly first. When you have screwede on the lense, first check infinity on a very distant object, second check close focus on a distant object at 1m exactly. When you focus at the object the distance ring on your lense should indicate 1m. You can also check the distance of the object with another camera.
Second you have to check the correct lense working distance, this is the distance from the lense to the film. When it is not correct or differs a few hundred millimeters your picture is unsharp at F2. The only way to check this is to shoot a roll of film.

Valkir, pretty much every Soviet camera lens since 1947-48 or so was coated at factory. J-9s didn't come in production until 1955.
Some late lenses have color-neutral coating not giving much of a hue in reflection, e.g. Helios-103 is known for that.
