black and white why bother

I have to admit I prefer B/W because it has nothing to do with reality, it's an abstraction sometimes it looks harder and sometimes it looks softer than color. Neither is better it's all a personal choice.

Just like my wife; when she would ask me something and then doesn't like the answer. Now I just say "what ever". Doesn't pay to engage in conversation with someone who already has the answer.

Why B/W?

Why B/W?

I grew up in the 50's, when b/w was the rule. I now shoot color and b/w, and more recently, IR for b/w. All have their place, and as juried shows show, many, many different opinions about what is "art" and what is not.
The medium depends on what you intend to show about the subject, and not what somebody else thinks is "good"
 
Most stuff works better in b/w for me except nature shots. Flowers are rarely good in b/w. I suppose it depends what you shoot. Portraits are almost always better in b/w, I find, because colour never quite gets skin tones right.
 
I love black and white because it removes the distraction of colour and places all the emphasis on texture and tone and by divorcing from reality slightly it can change the way we present what we see in an image.
Lots of scenes simply do not work in colour but likewise lots of things only work in colour.
I usually carry a camera loaded with each when I go out shooting and some days I wil only use one, others like today I will use both, sometimes onthe same scene.
Today I was in a striking location with lots of repeating patterns of light and shadow in concrete and steel.
I shot mostly mono but there were some really interesting and well done grafitti/street art pieces which were really colourful so I shot those on Sensia.

Horses for courses, I love and use both often.
