I failed in convincing Leica NJ to send me black dot. I am willing to purchase the darn thing. I checked with DAG and sent an email on when they think they can stock the item. However, customer service for any Leica related things seems infectious.

Does anyone else have an idea where you can get this?

DIY.

1. Twist the logo dot off (it's held on by double-sided tape) with your thumb or a bit of rubber. It will come off after a while. (Leica prises it off and replaces it - quick, but destroys it.)

2. Spray it your colour of choice using car touch-up paint, and allow to dry

3. If you want the wording to be silver metal, gently sand the raised lettering with 1200-grit wet-and-dry paper, or a very fine finger-nail board

4. Re-affix to camera with fresh double-sided tape

And you can always get a replacement red dot from Leica if you change your mind.

thank you so much. this DIY i can do. cheers

Cheap too!

I did mine two years ago - camera's a bit scruffy now, but the black dot is still unmarked.

(I don't like being a billboard - if manufacturers want me to show their logos clearly, they can pay me! I cut labels off my clothes too!)

Nasty camera-phone photo:

Just got mine from Don. Waiting to put it on till after the M9 and lenses go in and back for adjustments. I know its 'a camera' but will just make it look better for my eyes.

How did you fail in convincing them?

I asked for the Black dot for my "Leica M8.2" and stuck it on my M7. I made a topic about this very subject on the Leica M forum here.

I told the truth and this is what it got me. Never again. Oh well.

Good Afternoon,

Having purchased a Leica M8 recently has been a privileged. It is my first rangefinder and second Leica product, and I never would have though I would enjoy the switch from dSLR. However, the feeling is accompanied with some concern on how to safely guard the Leica M8 during the day shooting at random things. It has been recommended that one should switch the "red" Leica logo with a "black" one that is found on the newer version. My question is that how does one get the black dot logo? Can this be purchase?

Leica's response
Unfortunately Leica can not provide a black version. Consider a small removable piece of black tape as some photographers have done.

My attempted try below. It didnt come out well. So i used paint thinner to remove the red color. Im going to try again with a flat black paint tomorrow.

Well, I just tried to get one from Leica UK. I only mentioned that I wanted a replacement dot for an M8.2. Didn't mention `Black` and guess what? It didn't work.

Anyone would think they were diamond encrusted or something. This is what they said below :-

Hello

Please can you supply us with the serial number of your camera, along with your full name and address details.

At present we can supply you with a Red Leica Logo for your camera or pass your details on to the factory to see if they can supply the logo for Leica M8.2.

We look forward to being of assistance

Kind regards

PS: final touch. I got a nice finish on the raised lettering by putting a smear of metal polish (toothpaste will do) on some paper on a flat surface and rubbing the logo against it.

Sorry - I should've mentioned that earlier!

thanks for this. it cost me less than $5.00 to do and with very good result. still have plenty of paint left for this dings and scratches on the m8. alright im being facetious.

I just emailed Leica NJ and asked for pricing on a CLA and a couple replacement red dots for my m6's.... their CLA was way over priced but they sent me two red dot logo's for free. I painted one Black with some auto spray and before it dried cleaned off the lettering with a q-tip and some alcohol after a couple coats it was all done. Looks just like a brand new black dot. :D
