Does this IIIc look like it has got a good paint job or a bad one?
yes, I know it is hard to tell from a photo.

It looks good enough - doesn't it.
Lucky for me, it's too close to the holidays to be tempting.

This person would not respond to my question whether or not it was a paint over chrome finish or de-chromed before paint finish so I would be careful not to pay full retail value unless he is willing to come clean.

I find it interesting that he calls it a "display piece". It gives me the impression it is a superficial paint job.

I agree..also look at the photo of the bottom plate at the edge above the open close key. It may just be a reflection but it looks to me to be chrome showing through. And the advance knob appears to be paint over chrome..

I like the chrome knobs better, but please don't tell me someone painted the vulcanite.

From the pics the paint looks okay to me, but there is plenty of time to write and ask for bigger/more detailed photos. Vulcanite doesn't look shiney to me, so I doubt if it's been painted, but probably replaced. My guess is there's no response to "how the painting was done" inquiries because he doesn't know.xayraa33 said:Does this IIIc look like it has got a good paint job or a bad one?
It is rather attractive and I could certainly shoot with it. (Maybe for a little less $$; he's kinda pushin' the limits there.) I do have one repainted camera, a Zorki.1 that I'm happy with. For the most part though, and it's just my personal preference, new skins - no problem, but original paint/chrome in any condition is better... for me.

I agree with you. I love some of the new camera covers.

I think I'm going to recant from this statement... at least the "any condition" part. I remembered seeing a Barnack some time ago for sale "as is" in the Bay, that wasn't just worn, but had some really bad pitting in the chrome, top to bottom. Rub marks, brass showing through my preference would be to live with it and admire it. But rough pitting I don't think I'd have any problem with smoothing it out and giving it a good paint job.For the most part though, and it's just my personal preference, new skins - no problem, but original paint/chrome in any condition is better... for me.

Thomasw_, you probably have the only f/3 Summaron in all the universe. Mind you, f/2.8 can be rounded up and f/3.5 can be rounded down...
