hi RFF folks,

i am thinking of re-covering my M4, its vulcanite is peeling off and vulcanite could be really slippery with my hands' perspiration... so griptac makes a lot of sense after reading some user comments here

my little query is that:

Griptac comes in 2 colors and there seems not many M users out there have put GREY griptac on their chrome M bodies... at least that's my impression after some google-ing

anyone would like to post pictures of chrome M bodies recovered with griptac, especially the Grey one? or pointers to previous thread?

thanks a lot!🙂

Can't help you there, but can point out that the 'black' GripTac is more like dark anthracite. The grey GripTac is light grey. Although that will probably not influence your choice 😀

I got that anthracite GripTac on a black M3, so that's of absolutely no help, I gather? 😛

But, why not order them both? Easy enough to sell the one you're not going to use here later.

no pics, sorry

as my spouse likes to say, black is just so slimming ...

yes, black is slimming... but black can make the rest that is not covered in black stands out more, sometimes 😉

black griptac on black bodies makes a lot of sense, in fact a thought just passes me: will GREY griptac on Chrome bodies make it more "stealth" because the chrome part is less contrasted with, say black or other darker color

i know it's me, silly thoughts like these get into my head

You make an excellent point. Lowered contrast will indeed make the thing less "noticeable" due to the nature of human vision. So grey/chrome is a good "stealth" machine.

I confirm that the black Griptac ain't really black at all. More like dark grey. I just covered one of my M3s with the Black Beauty. That is black and beautiful and in compare the Black Griptac looks like plastic.

Last summer I took my chrome M4 to Belize. The humidity and temperatures caused the 40 year old vulcanite to come off in chunks. I sent it to Cameraleather and had it recovered in grey griptac. It looks great.

Now I have never posted a photo on the web and not sure how. If you PM me your email, I can email you a few photos. Or if anyone else wants to post a pic for me, send me an email, I will attach photos of the M4 and they can post.

Cameraleather did a great job and having grey on the M4 and black vulcanite on the M2 makes telling them apart very quick and easy.

I say go for it. Grey on chrome really is not any different then using chrome or black lenses on bodies with different finishes.

I just emailed you a couple photos of the chrome M4 with grey griptac, chrome M2 with black vulcanite and each camera with black or chrome lens attached.

It appears that grey on chrome is rare. I kinda of like having a unique camera. Of course, any non vulcanite covering from Cameraleather will give you a unique M4.

yes richard,

i just got those pictures and attached 2 of them here,

somehow, grey griptac on a chrome M looks very stylish to me, stylish like it should have appeared in 2001: A Space Odyssey

i have a much better idea now, thanks alot!

and thanks to the above posters' comments also🙂

I have a grey griptac IIIc. Oddly, since covering it in grey, I haven't had a single person come up to me and ask if it is a Leica. I usually had someone every second or third trip out, particularly when using a collapsible lens.

If I was going black, it would be partly for looks - and then I would have gone leather instead. There is something about the grey that says 'function' to me, possibly because it is a bit less beautiful than the remains of the vulcanite it replaced.
