I got a Blackberry Bold 9700 and quite like it. Went with the BB instead of the iPhone because got sick of seeing the iPhone everywhere I turn. It's like Apple is turning everyone into pod people (pun intended) with the exact same phone. It's really ridiculous when you go out to lunch with some friends and there are five indistinguishable iPhones on the table. At least with the BB there's a bit of variation in the models.
Having said that, if you want a toy you can play around with, get the iPhone. The Blackberry is a good phone but it's no toy (and I don't mean this in neither a good or a bad way). Sure, you can play on it, too, but it doesn't come close to the iPhone in that regard.

Look into the android phones as well, in my eyes they are the closest competition to the Iphone with a large app marketplace and similar features. Almost every carrier has at least one.

The best camera is one that still works!
From someone who threw his mobile phone away many years ago and now refuses to have one at all ... this a tricky question!
It stiil fascinates me when I'm giving some doctor's receptionist or similar my details and they ask for my mobile number ... their look of disbelief when I tell them I don't have one is priceless.
I think they're the work of the devil ... along with digital imaging!

I'm a fan of android. How about a Nexus One or Droid?
But if it's truly an iphone vs bb question my vote goes for the iphone.

Ah, what a coincidence this thread comes along right now. I've been hankering for a smartphone, but after a disastrous experience with (pre-Cingular) AT&T, I vowed never to get stuck in a contract again. This, of course, ruled out the iPhone. Recently, however, Boost Mobile added the BlackBerry Curve to their offerings, and about two weeks ago I decided to take a chance with them. So far, very good: basically an all-you-can-eat plan for 60 bucks, coverage (Sprint network) is pretty good, download speeds for Web stuff is decent (EvDo/3G), GPS comes in might handy, sound quality for calls is quite good, and e-mail...well, this is where BlackBerry has traditionally blown everyone else into the weeds, and e-mail for me is still the killer "app."
Mind you, iPhones are cool (I've set up enough of them for clients to know them rather well), but they don't quite stomp the BB into the ground, and I say this as a stone-cold Mac aficionado of fifteen years. I don't look upon my phone as a pocketable multimedia device (although my Curve handles most of that stuff well enough for the occasional time-killing diversion for me), but rather more as a multi-level (voice/text/e-mail/IM) communication device. On this level, the CrackBerry holds its own against anything else, and in one regard (e-mail) aces the pack.
I'm a happy camper. And I don't need an app for that.

iPhone iPhone iPhone iPhone.....
If you can wait a few months the next generation of iPhone will be launched in July.
I’ve had mine two years and wouldn’t consider using anything else, the App store has revolutionized smart phones.

Having used both I say definitely not blackberry. But if you are not on AT&T or if AT&T has poor reception in your area, get an android phone such as Verizon Motorola Droid or TMobile Nexus One.
I like Android and use the Droid myself but the popularity and 3rd party support of iPhone is a very strong point.

I was a BBerry user for 6 years and changed to iPhone last year. It is so much more flexible. It also holds all of my iTunes music.

I only have a company sim-card. As we have a mobile flat I am allowed to use it private but I am not allowed to use any data services like GPRS. With that restriction it's not possible to buy a private iphone and use it with the company sim-card. Too bad.
I would get an iPhone if I were in the market for a smart phone. As it is, I use my Motorola just for making and taking calls. It has 3G features but I'm not on a data plan. It has a camera that is used only accidentally.
I'll happily do email, web browsing, photo editing, etc on a cute little Mac 12" PowerBook.
iPad? Hmmm... I might go for a used WiFi one as early adopters dump 'em for the 3Gs models.

I've had an iPhone for a while and wouldn't buy it again. It's nice as an MP3 player and sort of acceptable as an app platform. As a phone it's pretty mediocre regarding reception, voice quality etc. - maybe I was more critical because I had a high-quality business phone before.
The app store is nice, well if you want 250 different fart button apps. Overall I have the impression that app quality has been on the decline.
I used to develop software for my telephones myself when I needed something; for the Nokia E-series I was using before I had written a few things, a calendar converter, a GPS data logger and so on using PyS60. The iPhone makes that rather difficult, tying you to the Mac as a development platform and to developer contracts. I also find it annoying that you can't run Skype or other instant messaging apps in the background - whenever you want to do something with your phone it logs you out. Listening to streaming radio in the background is possible, but it makes you jump through hoops, and it works only for MP3 radio streams. OS 4 is supposed to change that somehow, but it's not clear yet when and how and what that will do to battery life. So far I'm underwhelmed, my supposedly smart phone stops being smart far too early and too often for my liking.
I guess I'm just not the right customer. My next phone won't be from Apple.

my understanding on the 04 software is that it can be downloaded onto a 3g/3gs phone, so no need to wait for a new phone this summer...is this accurate?

iPhone - Zero arthritis risk
I have seen so many a twisted thumb in the hands of Blackberry users... Pity on them!
In spite of the lack of an equivalent BB chat system, the iPhone is the best all-around smartphone with a full browser for internet access and more than 100k apps available, of all sorts.
The poor AT&T service should in no way detract from the superior features of the iPhone. I've used my unlocked version in Belgium (with Belgacom) and the Dominican Republic (with Orange). In both cases, the superior quality of service was taken advantage fully by my iPhone.

I started with a Motorola Q phone on Verizon. It was a great phone, but as an email/browser platform, battery life was poor and the Windows Mobile OS unstable.
So I got a Blackberry. Hated the UI and browsing experience. Also the built in camera sux even for a phonecam. Returned it.
Now I have an iPhone 3Gs, and I love it. Great apps, great browser, great email/calendar/contacts integration. Stable OS. Good battery life. Decent camera. The only fly in the ointment is the AT&T network. I never had a dropped call with Verizon, but it's commonplace with AT&T. But the device really makes up for it.

My wife loves the iPhone I got her for her birthday a couple years ago - she can't imagine living without it. She is smart and tech savvy - and still can't get her university email account set up to deliver to the phone. I have a Blackberry, and it took me 5 minutes to set it up to access my IMAP account. For a cool hand-held computer that does a lot of other stuff aside from being a phone, go Apple. If you want to access email (other than webmail) easily, go Blackberry.

Ambitious, but rubbish
I have an iPod touch and love it - easy to use, relatively fast and stable, easy to type on. My wife has had a few BBs and I don't care for them. Slow, buggy, and difficult to use. The one she has now is *ok*. Browser speed is not bad but still hard to type on. iPhone is a breeze, especially in portrait, and usually it automatically corrects whatever you goof up.

Yes, but this is just Beta software, in other words still in development and with a few issues.
It is rumored that the new iPhone will have a larger screen and a faster processor. This may or may not be off interest to you. With OS 4.0 certain features will not work on the iPhone 3G. The iPhone 3Gs will be the lowest spec to have all the features. The original 2G iPhone is not supported.

iPhone definitely
I have both, BB for work, provided to me by my employer and the iPhone for all else
BB is better if you get 100's of emails daily, I do
iPhone is better for all else
the camera is best in bright and even light
hold it steady as possible and square to the subject.
Started using the free Photoshop mobile app, it helps improve some shots
as an all around device the iPhone is awesome for travel.
I use skype on it for free or near free VOIP calls when abroad
web browser on BB is painful, I only use it when desparate
iPhone rocks, and I can say without hesitation that I also love the ipad, although that one is more for planes and hotels than carrying around while touring or shooting
