Blank rolls of film --why?

Blank? As in, clear? Or exposed? Important distinction. If the films are 100% clear no edge codes it sounds like you've mistaken your fixer for your developer...

Second this.

Blank, clear --> Probably hit the film with fixer first.

Blank, black --> Film was exposed to light.

And, no recriminations. I've seen the first, from a very experienced photographer.
