what's up with all this friggin' blog spam?

0 to 60 overnight!

my blog has lots of comments now and gee whiz, if my penis needs help or i need some other pharmaceutical i now know where to buy it.

these miserable blood sucking, life annoying bastards are everywhere and i'll never buy a thing from them.

do these assholes really think anyone enjoys having their 'space' invaded?

ok, end of rant!

now, is there anything i can do to stop this crap?

I wish I knew what to tell you. If that ever happens to my Guestbook (which hardly ever gets signed, anyway) I know of a way to block certain entries, but I am the owner of my own code. I don't know how you'd be able to prevent that with the engine you're running with.

Those people are absolute morons; they will spam themselves into illegality.

I noticed your using blogger. They have a word verification for the comments that should stop the spam. Find the settings under -> Settings -> Comments. Just turn it on and thats it.

More info on the word verification can be found here (link).

Hope this helps.

Ditto, I had quite a time figuring out how to set up that blog of mine. (no I am not that bright, I know) But, I did get that word verification turned on.

Joe, I'd switch to something else. I use Wordpress. If you have your own webspace (or if you'd need some, I could probably work something out), it's a very fast and easy setup and it also allows you two different VERY good ways to stop spam. You can have it go through SpamAssassin and also go through another called SpamKarma. I have no problems with spam anymore. 🙂

I use wordpress too, and there is a plug in that automatically moderates comments made on old entries (spammers tend to hit theres), there is also options to moderate comments which contain certain keywords. after some tweeking I have the spam blocking working perfectly.

DOn't disallow anon posting on Blogger - ot everyone wants a blogger ID. I know I don't.

Honestly, I think the most effective solution would be (as others have suggested) to ditch blogger for something with a bit more power to it. WordPress is always highly recommended. I've been using MovableType for a couple of years now, and it has some handy anti-spam technology.

Both need your own webspace. But Stephanie has offered. And if needs be, drop me a line - I have some lying unused also.

I have more than I could ever need...I host with Dreamhost. It's coming up that I'll need to pay again, but I think someone's going to give me a referal...should help things considerably. I'll have to cough up about 8 more dollars after that for the year's hosting. 😀

Joe, I turned off comments on all my blogs as soon as the spam started. It's okay -- people can send me email if they want to comment.

Which works.

But I find part of the power in the medium is the interactivity - which comments greatly aid.

With some decent spam reduction measures in place (MTBlacklist, when set up right, is pretty effective), the gains of having comments available greatly outweigh the pain of cleaning up spam.

Heh. Pleasewipeyourfeet.com came about in the early days of my web exploration when I was still actively participating in graphic design stuff. It's a play off of NowWashYourHands. I came up with it when browsing there one day. Glasswings.org is one of my first domains...the others were illusionistic.net and absinthetic.org, both of which are still available, IIRC.

i have turned on 'word verification' so i'll keep watch to see what transpires.

seems i may have some unplanned for time to write and scan.

small blessings...

and thanks for all the tips. blogger seems to meet my simple needs so i hope to not have to change.
