Bob,

I'll likely try and print one of those head and shoulder shots in B&W for you.

Might want to bring an empty 17x22 paper box for transport and protection.

i'm enjoying this Bob series.

B,

The smut here is Bob is a very-very tall guy who is kinda lanky. I too am a lanky guy, not because I'm tall like Bob, but because I'm skinny.

I have that enormous 50 Lux-SL lens that many people make fun of because it is huge and heavy. Likely the biggest small format 50 ever made. Definitely a "Porker."

I kinda find it interesting that no reviewer ever states how remarkable the rendering is of this lens wide open. It is really great.

So I mount this huge lens on my new CL and took about 10-12 head and shoulder shots of Bob at the most recent NYC Meet-Up from across the long rectangular table.

When I downloaded the files and looked at them on my EIZO I could really see how the 50 Lux-SL effectively became a 75 Lux due to the crop factor. Considering the 75 Cron-SL goes for $4750.00 and is not readily available I think the F1.4 has something to offer. These shots really blew me away.

Kinda funny gripping the E82 sized lens like a grip with the left hand. The CL is mucho small, so the rig looks really funny, but the images are really serious. Unlike a lens extender I don't loose two F-stops, and the sweet spot is beyond perfect.

BTW I already have mucho adapters and can mount my 58/1.2 Noct-Nikkor on the CL using the 50/1.2 Noctilux profile to effectively create an 87mm F1.2. My 50 Lux-R "E60" though I think will be my favorite lens, that too becomes a 75 Lux.

brilliant bit of lens geekery there.

B,

Mucho geeks and nerds at the NYC Meet-Up. We also had a guest from Haw-Y-E: Jaymz.

UPDATE: Don't tell anyone, but I'll be mounting a Leitax "Almost Auto-Aperture" Nikon F-mount to my 50 Lux-R "E60." This lens mount converter allows me to mount the 50 "E60" on my Nikon F3P. A lever opens the iris for focusing, and for stopping down you just release the spring loaded lever to take the shot.

This allows exploitation of shallow DOF at F1.4 for focusing when stopping down on the CL and SL. Really makes shooting of a mirrorless camera more like a SLR. Of course you still have a digital VF'er for brightness and can still zoom in 3X and 6X to exploit magnification.

This is my trade secrete: don't tell anyone. LOL. This is my secrete weapon.

So I made a few more prints to annoy people.

I took some shots of Mean Joe the "Biker Dude." In one print I tweaked the clarity to +34 to make a print of "Killer Joe" shot with the 50 Lux-SL on the CL wide open as a 75 Lux.

The second print I zeroed the Clarity to soften him up and to make Joe look a bit less evil. The tonality does not have the midrange boost that also somehow adds a touch of extra contrast.

I think I like the first print best (Killer Joe). Kinda subtle the difference though. The second print has more of a glow though.

So the prints I will bring to the May Meet-Up will display how accurate the focus is. All the shots are at F1.4. I use the print of me which is backlite to display how this lens depending on how used could be one of those lenses that are overly sharp that if you want to have friends don't shoot people with this lens.

In the prints is displayed "Noctilux Nose Effect" because the DOF is so shallow. Also displayed is the "Telescope Effect" of magnifying small detail. The shallow DOF though really isolates the subject and presents mucho depth in the prints.

Joe looks like a tough guy from Brooklyn in this portrait. Definitely a killer.

Why would making prints annoy people?

PTP,

Please do not take what I write literally. I use a lot of creative license here and more or less I present a persona.

Realize that if I do annoy people, it is an unintended consequence, but it does seem like not everybody appreciates how I express myself.

A while back (5 years ago) I bought a Leica Monochrom. Why should buying a camera upset people? Why was I personally attacked and accused of being a wealthy dentist instead of a serious photographer? Why did this annoy people?

Anyways I'm riffing off this effect that seems apparent on the internet. Never understood why my pleasure or happiness would wound people so deeply. There is a bigger deeper meaning here. The world is a funny place. Please take my mention of annoying people as humor.

Can't wait to see them!

Bob,

No hype: the two portraits of you are great. One is landscape and the other vertical. Really remarkable...

If you decide to frame them, know that I purposely made them to fit a stock frame available from Archival Methods. Around $85.00 per frame and that includes a UV acrylic and cut mat.
