If you like your mods, great; I admit to being too squeamish.
I kinda go along with a friend slightly older than I am, who once said: "I spent two years in Vietnam trying NOT to get my body pierced."

People get squeamish about different things. I enjoy the experience of being pierced, but I'm deathly afraid of heights. I was once in a theme park in Brunei, and there was this ride which took you up to a twenty-storey height before dropping you. I rode on it three times in an effort to get rid of the fear, but it didn't go away.
I don't like the idea of hurting people, and perhaps that's why I like piercing. It's a sort of subversion of the usual ideas associated with pain.

it's actually because our generation (well...the past couple generations, as i'm getting old) haven't had a major conflict (like vietnam) that we look for other rites of passage. it is something sorely missing in most modern cultures (in my honest opinion). i consider myself lucky i didn't have to go to war...don't get me wrong. i'm just saying that is probably the root of the psychology behind it.
getting my nipple pierced hurt *so* bad that i vowed i would take that sucker to my grave with me!!

I never saw it as a rite of passage, really. I would have done it earlier, but I was still in school and the army, then. And haven't tattoos been around forever, in spite of peace or conflict?
Of course, body modification has been used in rites of passage in many cultures all over the world.

That gives me the creepies just thinking about it!
And no, I don't have any "mods" except for ears. I am the biggest baby when it comes to needles! I'm highly allergic to pain! I need a general anesthetic to get a flu shot!

Most people say the nipple hurts the most.
My tongue piercing didn't hurt at all. My ear piercings hurt a bit. None of them could compare to the pain that comes with standard injections.
Then there was the time a medic tried to feed an IV tube into my right arm. He got it wrong three times, and I passed out from the feedback. It wasn't a pleasant experience.

Not to hijack your thread, but -- and I didn't see this until after I posted my last ...
There is, unfortunately, one involuntary "rite of passage" involving "body mod" which is very gruesome and ghastly and unfortunately still goes on today.
If you don't know what I mean, PM me for some links. Please be warned. This material will either make you very mad, very sick, or bring tears to your eyes if you read it.

I know what you're referring to. It's doubly hateful, because not only is the surgery extremely painful, the mutilation of the organ is meant to close all possibility of pleasure off from the victim. And it is rarely done voluntarily, or even on individuals who can be considered adults.dmr said:Not to hijack your thread, but -- and I didn't see this until after I posted my last ...

clarence said:You certainly have some impressive battle scars there, Ash. Especially from the 35mm canister (and that's why I never pop the cans. I leave a little leader out so I can start the spooling in daylight).
I presume there are two in front and two slightly behind them?

Heh, I forgot I also have a very faint scar along my left wrist, like a suicide scar, from a wooden/glass cabinet falling off a shelf. I caught it and a metal box attached inside pushed its way through the skin. Very thin scar, very difficult to notice.
As for the tongue, no. I have 3 down the centre and one to the side (my right side, the left to anyone looking at me head-on).
That 'modification' that you speak of in Africa, if I'm thinking correctly, is disgusting. It just shows how primitive humans can be in such a 'modern' world.
Oh back to the thread - pain. Hmm well I got my tongue numbed every time, since I didn't really want to have any adverse effects like my tongue seizing up after piercing. I still felt the 'pop!' every time though. Lip labret was a piece of cake, no numbing. Apparently I said 'owww' AFTER my belly had been pierced (no numbing), and neck piercings hurt the most.
The first was done without any numbing/freezing spray. First the pinch of the forcep things, then the sting of the needle, then the actual 'banana' bar, that was an experience! the second one was numbed (even though I didnt ask for it to be) and it was a really dull kind of pain, like something very very blunt being pushed through slowly.
I love piercings, I love the whole experience, its a pity I can't get more though. My dad has only ever known about my lip bar, and he tried to throw me out the house for it.
He did, however pay for my bicep tattoo and such he was a hypocrite over his hatred of piercings. I daren't get any more in case he found out. I get free room and meals at home, I dont want to lose that!!

What's incredible is that it doesn't seem to bother some Africans. I saw a recent documentary dealing with, among other things, that topic. Both male and female people interviewed in Cameroon supported the practice. They said it was part of their culture and they liked things that way. INCREDIBLE!

Please don't get it confused... a thread on "camera & mod's bodies" might get a bit too personal.

The world, as a whole, IS NOT as modern as we would often like to believe.

Oh, if you've ever heard a first-person report of witnessing it, it *most definitely* bothered those it was done to.
How a mother could subject her daughter to such a barbaric practice -- after going through it herself -- is totally beyond my comprehension.

On a lighter note, here's a body mod that was easily removed (by easily I mean I had to peel the latex from my face!)
This was one of the few things in that photography class that I actually enjoyed. Mine was blatantly the best
(the person doing the make-up is Philomena ... can't remember her surname, she's the art technician and is a trained makeup artist).
I won't subject you to the god-awful photo the photography teacher took and 'photoshopped'. She ruined the image, but yes, I had my hair up in pigtails.
The scar is filled with banana. I spent the rest of the day with a half of my face still looking like that. My hair has since grown longer, but I haven't got any prettier!
