Book 2 & Lulu - still investigating

I think I'll ask for a reprint then.. I've got my copy at home.. I wonder how this works.. but I swear.. in the future.... let's work on a better solution 🙂

I may still have an "in" with some local printers that may be able to do a "small run" but I'd have to find out more for any future books.

Hi I thought that I would finally just order a book and deal with any magenta casts to any (hopefully not my) photos.

Ordered a book and received this message:
"Oh my, we regret to inform you that there has been a problem fulfilling your order. You will receive a full or partial refund of your order, depending on how much of the order we can fulfill

If you have any questions please go to your "my lulu" tab, select the order history link, select the "receive status" link, and send your request to our order fulfillment team.

I sent them this:
Hello,
I received the email below from you but when I check on the website there appears to be no problem. Would you please clarify.
Thanks.

And they replied with:
Dear Mark,

I have just checked the details of your order. Unfortunately, there was a problem with your file, and this could not be printed. If you require further details, then please do come back to us again, and your query will be passed to our print specialists.

Thank you

Please feel free to contact us if you have any additional questions.

Does any know of a problem with the file?
Is this a new problem?

PITA

that's news to me.. I just checked our RFF gmail account, which Lulu would contact us at, and there is nothing there from them. No surprise since they never even got back to me with my printing quality inquiry.

There has been no change to the file since I first uploaded it to Lulu and they've been printing it for months now. So if they are having a problem, it's due to their system. But it sure would be nice of them to tell us that they can't print our book anymore.

Did I mention that Lulu really sucks?

I'll try and contact them to see if they need a new copy of the file.. it's 'only' 850 megs, so it should upload easily in, say, 6 hours

could be with the amount of complaints and returns and inquiries regarding the quality, they might have marked the file and are no taking orders on it (pure speculaion).

I just put in a request to have them check it out.. it's possible the PDF file got corrupted.. that does happen from time to time for no reason at all.. they claim they'll check it out and get back to me soon

if need be, I can upload a new file and we'll be back in business soon enough

My copy just arrived yesterday. Finally thought I'd give it a try. To my non-professional, non-discerning eyes, the book looks good to me. So I asked someone that's a bit better with color than I. She indicated that there was indeed a very, very faint "pinkish" cast to some of the black and white photos. She said she probably wouldn't have noticed it if I hadn't asked specifically about it. She also mentioned that some of the color pictures seemed ever so slightly "off". Perhaps a bit too dark?

Anyway, I'm going to keep the book. My perception of color is naturally off so much that it looks absolutely beautiful to me. ;-) However, it would seem that these issues may not have been completely resolved.

It's a shame lulu has been non-responsive. What a fabulous project for this site, and a very cost effective way to produce such a book.

I got another response from Lulu:

Dear Mark,

I apologize your order was not fulfilled. This was the first order placed through our Spanish Printer for your book. The reason it did not print is because the source PDF was too big at over 800mb. There is another order that was placed from the Spanish Printer last week, I would like to wait to see if that one prints. If it does, then I will place a reorder for you, otherwise I will have to refund your order.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any additional questions.

Spanish Printer?

Ten days ago I finally gave in and ordered a copy of Book 2, in hopes the printing issues might have been sorted out. It arrived last Friday, and I noticed a faint pinkish tint even to the front cover photo! But inside this effect seems variable, affecting some pics noticeably and others apparently not at all. And I think that's odd. There are a few shots that have a sepia tint, and those too were immune from the pink... It's ok, I'll just explain to anyone who might notice that this is the special Lulu tint for greater artistic effect.

Maybe this will bring in some light ?

Seems they now print on the nearest-to-client printing facility...

Taffer,

Thanks.
It appears that the file size limit at the Spanish printing site is less than Book 2.

LULU have refunded my money (to paypal).

So who in the east coast of the USA will buy me a copy and ship it to Australia? 🙂
This of course is only feasible if the really cheap (free) shipping option is still available as I'd have to reimburse you (I don't really want to pay for two shipping amounts if I do not have to).

Any volunteers?

Taffer,

Thanks. Illuminating and annoying as Spain is further around the globe from Oz than the USA.

Now for something compleatly differente, can anyone tell me what software was used to authoring the book?
I'm thinking that printing a book with photos could be less costly than print individual photos at the lab... and the album is automaticaly done 🙂
