Book Club #2

All the recent talk about photo books got me thinking that we should do another book club thread. If you missed our first book club, you can read about the format HERE and you can read the first discussion thread HERE. Our first discussion was of "On Being A Photographer" by David Hurn and Bill Jay.

If you are interested in participating, please post your book suggestion in this thread (please limit yourself to one suggestion). Remember that you are free to suggest a book of photography or a book on photography. The only requirement is that the book be relatively easy to acquire. I thought that we should simplify the selection process this time around. So, once we have 6 suggestions, I will open a voting thread in which we will make our selection. That thread will run for two days. We will then give ourselves 4 weeks to get copies of the chosen book.

Is there any interest in this at all? Our last discussion was quite good. But, if there is no interest in discussing another book, I will let the idea die.

I am interested, it's just that I am still reading fundamental books, and not any of the "Photographer" type books. I'm currently reading "Mastering Black and White Digital Photography" by Micheal Freeman. While I find the book good, I had hoped it would cover more technique instead of post processing.

If something comes up that I feel I could participate in, I will join in. I did go back and read, and enjoyed, the Book Club thread for the "On Being a Photographer" book, however I haven't read the book.

I don't shoot film anymore, and I don't own a RF, although I am interested in them. I just purchased a Panasonic LX2 primarily for the native 16:9 format, and hope to do some good B&W work with it.

I'm interested, Marc. Just been rather busy the past couple of days and no books come immediately to mind. Perhaps if you suggest a book or two it would get things rolling?

OK, I'll break my own rule and propose both a book on photography and a book of photograhy.

1. "Crossings" by Alex Webb (HERE)

Webb is one of my favourite photographers. In my opinion, he is one of the great street photographers of our time.

2. "The Genius of Photography" by Gerry Badger (HERE)

This book was nominated by Martin Parr as one of the best photo books of 2007 (HERE).

I'm interested too. I've been meaning to read "Art and Fear" by David Bayles and Ted Orland.

Great, we have a couple of suggestions now. Let's give this another day or so to see whether anyone else is interested. If not, the three of us (four if Otto wants to join) can pick a book and get going.

Ok, I'll admit I'm not too educated with photographer's, or art, but I just picked up a copy of "Advanced Digital Black & White Photography" by John Beardsworth since I need something new to read, and am just finishing up "Mastering Black and White Digital Photography" by Michael Freeman. The former is my "entry", but I'm willing to learn, and participate.

Of course, I'm still trying to learn about this B&W thing so I guess I'm more into the how to rather than the philosophy of it all.
