I have recently bought a lot of photography books, mostly coffee-table type books by Magnum photographers and other photojournalistic types. The photographs are wonderful and inspiring, but I long to know the stories behind the photographs, too.

Can anyone please recommend books that have both photographs and the stories behind the photographs? The only book that I have that is close is "Memories of a Dog" by Daido Moriyama, a series of autobiographical articles he wrote for a camera magazine plus photographs from each place or time period. It's a fantastic book and provides a lot of insight into his thinking and photographic process.

The nearest modern equivalent to what I'm after is a well-written travel or road trip blog. Are there any good books (with decent photography, of course) like this? I wish HCB had been as dedicated a writer as he was a photographer, and had produced books that talked about his travels through places like China and India, not just displayed his photographs.

I can recommend Eugene Richards' The Fat Baby -- photos and text (stories) by Richards. I thoroughly enjoyed the synergy between the two in this excellent book. Note, however, that this is not a "travelogue" but more journalism (focusing on the people he is photographing and writing about).

Back issues of leica fotografie are great for that sort of thing. There is a huge(over 200 issues) for auction on Ebay right now. I don't know if you have read it, but the mag is amazing, in terms of information about shooting with Leica. Tons of amazing articles.
