I spent a little over two weeks in Borneo in November. I absolutely loved the place. It is a beautiful island, a Pacific paradise as you'd expect, quite diverse with a lot to see and a lot to do. People are extremely friendly, I had good time conversing with them and got along easily.
I have spend the whole trip in Sabah (the North-Western Malay part of the island) and even though I covered a lot of territory it still feels like I barely started to discover it, which is good news - more reasons to go back! Kota Kinabalu (KK) was my base, passing through every time I was changing destinations. One week of diving on Mantanani island - beautiful idyllic and calm (nothing but a small fishing village some huts for travelers and a diving lodge). Second week trekking through "Lost World" of Maliau Basin rainforest - a fairly recently explored jungle, so still fairly untouched and virgin.
Photographically the trip was... average. I would have liked to have done more and more people/street subjects, but I was traveling with a couple of friends and priority was to keep moving and to be in the nature (and I absolutely suck at landscape photography). Still, I'd like to share some images and open a thread about this beautiful island, hopefully others can share their experiences or even better photos.
My gear of choice was D700 plus two NIKKORs - 35mm f/1.4G and 24-120mm f/4. I took DSLR mostly for peace of mind. Borneo knows extreme humidity (devil's armpit) and we were going during monsoon season, so I chose DSLR mostly to be confident that I'm indeed getting my shots and not dealing with some strange issues like fogged film etc which I would have found out later.

Great photos. I especially liked the one of the boy standing in the puddle, looking down. All your available light photos are nice. Thanks for sharing. Did you get any diving photos?

My friend had an underwater camera and took some diving photos (don't have them at the moment though). Diving a did a lot The best area for that in Borneo (and actually one of the better spots in the world) is Sipadan. But we didn't go there because it can get really busy/crowded. So we went to a little less known Mantanani. Diving there was great! Still plenty to see. Plus I made friends with locals and they took me diving with them for free half of the time

Excellent photos that reflects the street scenes that is so typical of Malaysia and SEA. But tell me; November, isn't that the start of the rainy season?
