Bought a 21mm f/3.4 Super Angulon lens for $750

Hate to say it, but you paid too much for it. Even if it does have all the doodads.

I bought mine a few months ago for $800. Good deals are out there, especially for this lens since it's not really that great on digital.

Good evening everyone ,

It cost three times today!
I just got it this week for 2.000 usd ! :bang:
It SN is 1967xxxx but I'm very satisfied :)

SA21 disassembly

SA21 disassembly

One of my SA21s has a tiny play on the barrel end, up front.
Could you kindly show a small procedure to help me open it ?

You did very well on price

I recently bought one cheap because it was realy moldy and dusty so I had to take it apart and clean it.
The 21mm finder was also very hazy.

It was easier than I thought. All went well and I didn't "scar" the lens or finder.

The finder was difficult to take apart because the front element was glued in. A small scalpel and a lot of patience got the job done.
This is the order of the components.

Bringing back an old thread, I have a new to me SA f3.4 and there's a large fleck of black paint, I think, between the front and rear groups where the diaphragm is. this isn't uncommon in view and medium format lenses so there's no panic. Even if I don't clean it our it's no big deal but you know how it is to have a flake of any size in the lens.

My question, how does the back group come out of the mount? the photo's really don't tell how. I can't find any set screws and it appears to unscrew but I don't want to force anything.

Thanks!

The rear group simply unscrews like any normal screw, counter clockwise.
Just grab it with a piece of rubber for added grip. I also use a piece of thin soft leather.

You should be able to get to the fleck of paint once it's undone.

The front group is different. You need a needle nose spanner to engage the holes.
BUT Don't do this unless you're really confident. You can easily scar the front of the lens this way. Just one slip... :(

Thanks for your help! I've been unable to unscrew it but need to get a piece of rubber. I hesitate to put too much force on anything not knowing how it comes apart.

No intention of going into the front. If it comes to that it goes to the shop. I know my limits.

Thanks!

I had two 21/3.4 SA's. I sold (or swapped? Can't remember!) the cleanest looking one and kept the rougher one, as it was part of an original working set that I bought of an old war photographer. I just can't bring myself to break this set up. I suppose I have always been a romantic and sentimentalist.

This 21SA was LA'd along with the rest of the cameras and lenses from the set. I purposely left out the 'C' as I can't see that much cleaning was performed as the exterior of the lens is still covered in grime. The front group appears very clean and clear. After obtaining a magnifying head band 'thing' I made a more thorough inspection than what my worn out eyes could see on their own. I can now see lots gunk in the rear group.

I unscrewed the rear group from the body and found that the element retaining ring was loose and simply unscrewed with a toothpick. There is the tiniest chip just on the extreme edge of the front element of the rear group. It looks like a failed attempt was made to pick it out with a small screwdriver or similiar. This adds up as to why the 'gunk' inside is still present. I suspect that the element is stuck and couldn't be removed to clean inside the rear group. I tried to shift it with a hard plastic pick but it won't budge.

I'm determined to remove the element and clean this lens myself. I'm in Australia and I do not want to 'send it off' as the only person I trust to do a thorough job is Don from DAG. I will obtain some tools, take some pics and report back with my findings.

Thanks for the pics and words sc_rufctr.

Well, I got it apart OK.The rear element group (top of photo) looks like the balsam is deteriorated and separating, so I removed that as well.

I'm going to separate the elements and reglue once I've worked out a way to keep the elements in perfect alignment. They are of different diameters which poses a problem.

That speck on the paper is a grubscrew.

Keep you posted....

I now have the rear element separated into three pieces by heating in a pan of water. I did a test alignment and 're-glue' by using saliva (spit!), as a cement. Aligning the elements is very difficult as there is nothing to engage or seat one on the other. They just float around like a three piece ball-joint. The individual elements are very small. I then reassembled, took a couple of test shots. All looks very promising.:)

I'll post some pics and test shots once I have it all permanently cemented, cleaned and reassembled.

oooh. The photos in this thread are inspiring me to get out there with my SWC again. My head is not very often in the UW place, but these photos do it for me... :)

$750 for an SA 21 seems like a great price if it's in good shape! Enjoy it!

Fot those interested, I'll have an update on the 21SA cleaning and element cementing soon. I've been busy dismantling and cleaning a 28 m-rokkor and a couple of Pen F lenses...all good so far:)
