Breaking News: Kodak To Raise Prices of Film

Trius said:
Well, I'm going to stock up now. I don't begrudge any company having to raise prices, for whatever reason. I am certain that Kodak would not be doing this if it were not necessary. I can assure you that life-long Kodakers who have given all their efforts to analog photography are feeling a lot of pain.

It's interesting though. As globalization in the name of lower production costs expands, overall prices keep rising. Some of the cheap goods from low-cost manufacturing come complete with safety hazards and fake listing labels. OK, I know this bit is OT, and I really don't want to hijack the thread. But I'm just not in a really good mood today. Sorry all.

Trius,

You bring up unfortunate "truths". The reality is that environmental safeguards in the US, Canada, Europe (i.e. "the West") will undoubtedly result in higher costs of production and, with a global economy, result in shifting manufacturing to less "demanding" economies that are driven more by development needs than environmental soundness.

I think the answer is to use the world trade conventions to advance environmental protection as a global regime. It's a "long game" not prone to quick fixes and web post shibboleths!

I saw some 24 Exp Konica Minolta film at the Dollar Tree the other day. I forgot what the price was.

Well heck, if you were flogging stuff at $2.75/per and you found out that the local Rite Aid was pushing the stuff at $1.00/per what would you do?

Bad mouth the "competition" and "shine the light on me"! 🙄

What do you think about cameras made in Japan that have the word "Germany" stamped on the back? Just curious.

I think it's time to hijack this thread.

George, I think you're going to have to explain exactly what you mean. Come on, say it. You have something on your mind, spit it out.

Good point, George. No one likes to, especially the consumer. How many people will be asking their employers for a 20% pay increase because it costs them more to drive to work?

R.J.

Some poeple find ways to work it, either through merit or guile. Others find new jobs with better salaries. My employer tries to offset transit costs in different ways. He's trying to retain talent.

As for the film situation- I remember the Hunt Bros. Actually had a friend who cashed in his stockpile of silver at the time the prices were highest. I also remember my then employer Time-Life making plans on how to keep the business going in the face of rising film costs. Remember, the printing industry relied heavily on graphic films. They even invested in direct-to-plate technologies. That was the first sign I recall of the influence of digital technologies. More so than digital typography.

Naw, RJ, I don't want to hijack the thread.

I figure it this way - Kodak's been around for a century or so and I figure they make some pretty good film.

Not to say they are the best of the best (that's a fight not worth pursuing) and I use Fuji and Ilford too.

You know - the '''quality" stuff.

But.if what you are wanting is low cost film - here's a link to a thread from our own RFF site - this thread just started today:

What more of a "road map" could you ask for?

And, as you said, there's clearance K-M at the Dollar Store out there etc.

Chill. All of you, ok? Especially since I have no prefered horse in this race.

Thanks.

Yeah, I know the place.

Went into in once. They have a lot of okay "off brand" stuff - including some regional brands etc.

Kind of a clearance house etc.

These days I would need another reason to visit them as they are about 20 miles one way from my Copake home.

At current gasoline prices that's a bit over $6.00 r/t in transportation expenses alone - not to mention "wear and tear" on the vehicle and my psyche!

I'm more and more buying real local these days...

Of course, rising petroleum prices (let's not talk about what might happen if things get truly messy regarding Iran) have an effect on stuff like ink and paper for digital printing, from production to shipping. One good oil shock and we'll have a lot more to worry about than this.

George,

40 miles @ 44.5 ¢/ mile = $17.80 😱
