Brightin Star 28mm f2.8 pancake lens, very intriguing

In before the "expensive brand name camera" crew comes out crying crocodile tears that the dastardly Chinese dared to copy Miyazaki-sans MS-Optical lens the particular model of which he no longer makes...

I have been on and off tempted by this lens, its decent performance and the fair price, but frankly I have the G-Rokkor 28/3.5 in LTM and thus am good for small 28mm lenses.

I’m waiting for the next generation copy. Those dudes seem to up the name-game with every new generation and sky seems to be the limit.

If the next chinese copy lens is named “bozo Garbage” I will buy two, I swear ✌🏿

I have the MS-Optical 28mm f4 lens designed by Miyazaki Sadayasu of Japan right in front of me. It is a cute pancake lens with so-so image quality. I would say its build quality is poor as it looks more like a prototype. The focusing stick keeps dropping off is the biggest annoyance. Btw my copy even has a typo "TPIRLET" on it, so it is a collectible 🤣 .)

It is obvious the Chinese-made BRIGHTIN STAR (even typo is copied?!) is based on MS-Optical design. Why would they want to copy a mediocre JP lens (other than it's cute) is beyond me.

Well, they make it mass production priced . It is not a bad thing. M9 subforum at LUF has one thread with M9 sensors rendering illustratrated by this lens. Fine looking results to me. Some reviews of let's say original lenses are saying it is letting dust at the sensors. I hope Mic versions doesn't have this problems.

I have the MS-Optics Aporia 24mm f/2 ... and it is indeed a fun little lens, rather pricey, and with somewhat less than top-notch build quality... I've had to adjust the focusing scale a couple of times, the set screws tend to loosen. But it makes nice photos... 😀

I keep looking at the Brightin Star lens, but have to repeatedly ask if I really want a 28 mm lens that's crap in the corners when I already have four other good 28s. I guess not. Everything except those corners looks great though.

An M body really isn’t a pocketable camera and doesn’t become one by adding a lens, even if it only protrudes 10mm.
What you do get is a lens from a manufacturer who, judging from the design choices, didn’t put much innovation into the product.
Obvious priced to appeal to a quick late night red wine induced shopping impulse - possibly reflected in build, finish, QC.
Others may disagree, but I think it is just another bad karma lens, like the many we have seen from China in recent years.
If one is in it for the love of good lenses, but not the quirky boutique type like those of MS, then Voigtländer has a 28/2.8 which protrudes only 13mm more, but has great ergonomics and comes from a company that has been enthusiastically supportive of our style of photography for decades now.
Just saying.

Sometimes a lens can be too small and fiddly to use. I had the ZeissZM 35mm f2.8, so called small lens (not that small when compared to say a minox 35mm f2.8). But on Leica CL and Zeiss Ikon, I preferred using the Zm f2 (which could be a bit shorter) 1st world gripes.
However my VM 28mm utron ii is just fine Suze wise and very happy with it.
So just be aware a less can be too small and a bit of a pain to use in real life

This is true, but my M with a collapsible Summicron commonly can be found on a Strapateer strap under my elbow, under my jacket, and neither the 28/1.9 Voigtlander nor 28/2.8 Elmarit will fit there, where the lens under discussion is an obvious choice.

brightin star is not a typo its the name of company. its not a copy of that lens since its one stop faster and its high quality made. you all can just cry because chinese make same or better quality for a fraction of price... viltrox new line for example is better than anything from fuji and sigma and costs max 250 - innfew years we will not even remember other companies existed

It's a perfect lens for my film CL. It's so tiny and I like the quality of the images. I wish the aperture ring had click stops but you can't have everything.
