People gripe from time to time that the RFF is way more involved with gear threads and other non-picture taking activities.

I try to look thru the gallery, to comment on peoples pics, but I find getting around in the gallery and looking at pictures a bit cumbersome.

When you view things as a slide show, the banner and stuff at top cut the picture in half. I end up having to scroll down for each pic to see the whole thing. I have my monitor set at 1024x768, which I thought is a common size, do most people have it set higher? If you clicked on "slide show" and it changed the layout to better show the whole picture I think that would make it more conducive to look at and commenting on pictures.

Is it possible? Is it wise to do?

Just trying to get back to the photography part.

Some people just like to gripe -- over and over and over again. If it's not one topic they are griping about, it's another. 🙁

What size is your monitor... perhaps time for a bigger one? 🙄 🙂

Well, Brian, maybe he does need a bigger monitor, but my 15" Mac Powerbook monitor has the same problem, and I have not used a desktop monitor (Mac or Windows) which doesn't have this problem with the gallery. Have you tried the slideshow function? Do the portrait-format pictures fit on your screen without clipping? If so, what monitor are you using, and at what resolution?

I didn't even know the slideshow option exsisted 🙂

At my office I use a 17" monitor set to 600x800 and you have to scroll to see each image in a slide show, it would be nice if it opened in another window without banners to distract from the pictures too but I may be asking too much 🙂

What I find most cumbersome about the gallery is when somebody has uploaded so many photos in one shot that the other photographers are entirely pushed off the front page before I even have a chance to see their work.

Not that I wish to rant, but I believe the ability to determine what pictures best represent one's work (and to then edit accordingly) is a skill to be learned and practiced.

(and this is not directed at anybody who has contributed to this thread thus far, I just wanted to call attention to my pet peeve. 😉 )

Hmm yea, I try to look through the galleries. and I also try to comment on at least one photo for everyone who has left a comment for me, but to be honest it can be difficult.

I'm not sure how the gallery could be set up better, and my iBook has a maximum resolution of 1024x768 I think. I constantly need to scroll, even when I place my photo's at a small and manageable size. Maybe the auto-resize should be smaller on each picture, or banners moved below the images.

Maybe a pop-up window with a slideshow setting for the most recent photo's, and only 5 recent images for each member, so there isnt 15 from one member hogging space ?

I got the 5 image maximum anyways, so you never see me hogging that page 😛

No gripes here 😉

It is a gear head forum - what can one expect?~ Everyone who posts over 100 posts might try and stop mentioning camera brand marques and film vs digital threads.

But then it wouldn't be a forum 😉

So the answer to my problem of trying to focus more on the pics is to buy more gear!

I didn't mean this to be a RFF stinks thread, or that we don't need to talk about gear. Gear threads are the liquidity that keeps people coming back. If it weren't for them, this would be a FAQ list.

I was just looking for ways to make this more picture focused, and it seems that others see the same impediment.

I like the idea of a new window opening. I would guess if they are jpgs, they will resize to fit the window if they are too big. Compression sucks, but its better than not seeing the pic.

It is projects like this that make my IT guys cringe with every one of my sentences that begins with, " How hard would it be to....."

Well for me its trying to be reasonable. I've been there. I know how much effort it is when you're on the techy side, and I realise how much effort a forum of all things needs, especially constant maintenance.

Laying out this site in a way that pleases everyone is impossible. The layout is nice, but its too crowded for the gallery. Any simpler and it'd not show enough. No-one can win, but I think a 'simple' pop-up resizable-image window thing is our best bet. any other thoughts?
