Actually we're expecting her to take us back....we obviously can't govern ourselves...
If you guys are moving out, can we please have New York back? It used to be called Nieuw Amsterdam, you know... Peter Stuyvesant got it from the Indians, and I know we traded it for Surinam but maybe you guys are interested in that? Nice, humid tropical weather, lots of opportunities with some beads and mirrors, we pulled that off back then!?
You can come back every now and then to shoot (your cameras!) in the streets, we're very liberal on that!

Most truckers won't even know what this is. They see the words "Free Oil" and will come in.
Most Americans, no matter what kind of job they do, will not know what a Nobel Prize is, or that it is awarded in Norway. Those of us who do know were frankly shocked that Obama got it.
I'm a leftist, and I have nothing but contempt for him. As bad as Bush. Obama has broken EVERY campaign promise he made, including the one to BRING PEACE by ending the wars in Iraq and Afganistan NOW. Instead he's extended them and sent more of our young people to die for nothing....and the son of a bitch gets a PEACE PRIZE? I'm sad to say that I agree 100% with the rightwing nutjobs on this one....Obama should have done the honorable thing and refused the prize so that it could be awarded to someone who isn't commanding the most powerful military force the world has ever known in not one but TWO wars. Yeah, I know, Bush started them....but Obama said he'd end them immediately and he hasn't.

What do you mean 'run', exactly? You have 'run' the country in the ground. On borrowed money. Borrowed from who...? From those 'looking on in shock and horror'....

Time to remember queen Elisabeth who her ancestors actually were, then!
Easy opportunity to fix the situation with the London Met Police, being the liberal folk we are

I did not know that. I can find no reference to it. Do you have any links to sources? I could believe General Giap - perhaps - but Minh? I'm having a hard time with that.
I can find no reference to that either. Ho Chi Minh invoked the US Declaration of Independence when he announced Vietnam's independence, but he did not 'adopt' it, he just quoted the Preamble. And the Constitution of Vietnam is quite different than that of the USA. I wish I could find a 1946 version online, but the 1976 and the later Vietnamese constitution bear no resemblance to the US constitution. Any cites on that one?
Sorry Bill, just my trivial pursuits memory, it was a TV documentary many years ago, public-service probably, I can't remember the name. It seemed so bizarre it stuck with all the other detritus I hang on to.

I know, she's really a German. LOL
Like lots of European royalty, she can trace her descent from all kinds of different routes (and roots!): Celtic, Norse, Saxon, Norman, French, German etc etc etc.
For me the curious thing about the British Royal family is how tiny they all are (with the exception of Princes William and Harry who are both quite tall): the rest of them seem to have been miniaturised.

Bill, THIS is the story, and I remember it was of Mac Arthur's staff so presumably it would be this Thomas chap who took the guns, colt 45 autos, nickel plated in a fitted case iirc.
The story with the constitution was to do with the need to get Ho in office quickly when they kicked France's arse
, and yours was the best he could lay his hands on

PS, although he isn't packing them in this shot
PPS that also proves size isn't everything
that's probably in bad taste, sorry

This is way OT, but, with respect Chris, I don't recall that Obama ever said during the campaign that he would end both wars immediately.
He did say he would wind down American combat involvement in Iraq as rapidly as possible but at a pace ensuring security and stability for those still in Iraq. One can argue about the interpretation of that last clause, but I don't believe Obama ever declared he would end the war in Iraq on 21 January 2009.
He struck a much different posture on Afghanistan, attacking the Bush administration for failing to competently prosecute what he called a necessary war.

The irony of this declaration was its repeat of what King Bao-Dai had declared earlier. In the declaration , Ho Chi Minh plagiarized a famous statement from the Declaration of Independence of the USA: "All men are created equal." Under his regime's title "Democratic Republic of Vietnam" is the motto - still remaining today - "Independence - Freedom - Happiness," which was again plagiarized from the Sun Yatsen's "Three-People Doctrine."

Why can't anyone in the US look at the big picture instead of always arguing about whether one party is better than the other? I have news for you folks, neither party gives a rats a$$ about you. Obama might have been idealistic when he was elected, but I am sure he got a slap down from numerous sides when he took the office. Look how he acts these days, like a broken man. The elite don't care if it is a Republican or Democrat since they have both parties in their pocket. Doesn't anyone understand this?
So Royal patronage has its plus points then?
And in answer to someone earlier; the last English monarch was our Good King Richard III, 500 years back

I didn't think Obama was especially idealistic during the campaign and don't think he's behaving like a broken man.
During the campaign, the right painted him as a leftist as a feat tactic, while the left painted him as a leftist as an exercise in wishful thinking.
The key point about Obama's presidency right now is that he has only a 60-vote majority in the Senate at the best of times and getting that means placating non-Democrats and right-wing Democrats.
Successful boldness in politics is directly proportional to the votes you can muster. We'd be seeing a different style and different legislation if there were, say, 62 real Democrats in the Senate.

No no no no no! He was from a Norman family. The last 'British' monarch would have been someone like Caradog or Boudicca... perhaps Arthur, if he existed.

The child murderer? The guy who killed the Princes in the Tower of London? Richard III was of French stock (late Norman).
