The retail outlets near me that used to carry the British Journal of Photography have stopped, and it seems that a 12-issue US subscription is 175 pounds, or $280. It's a good magazine, well worth the $10 I was paying for it retail - but it's not worth $23/issue.

Just wondering if anyone might know a way to get it for a non-obscene price?

I know the Barnes & Noble near me had been carrying it, but dropped it for a few months, and now they're carrying it again. However, it's more like $15 than $10. At that price, I tend to only pick up the issues that interest me.

That seems an awful lot to send it over the pond. UK sub is £63. where did you get the quote from ?

That's the price they quote, which is what confused me. I guess they're paying out the nose for fast shipping - a student price (with slower shipping) is 'only' £113.

I last scouted B&Ns (even far afield) two months ago, I'll check some of the ritzier ones and see if it's made a comeback. Going to get their iPad app - it's quarterly, but sounds like they'll have most of each issue's content on there.

He got the quote from their website. BJP has awfully high fees for customers outside the UK and none of the promotions or student's offers are available outside the UK. I'm sure this has little to do with the price of shipping overseas. It's probably due to the simple fact that they get paid from advertisers only for the UK market.

As much as I love printed mags like BJP and Aperture, you might consider the electronic versions of BJP, which at least for the last few issues appear to be free. The online versions are not perhaps as complete as the print version (I've not compared them page to page), but they maintain a print-like format. For no charge.

With the money you save, maybe buy an iPad :)?

UPDATE: With a bit of digging on the BJP site I see that the online versions are a few months behind and include only a slice of the print versions. Excellent browsing nonetheless. I bet soon we will be able to subscribe to a digital version of their mag, as that is the publishing trend.

There is always the ipad version :

I also just noticed the other British magazine I used to get all the time before moving to the states - Black+White Photography now has a ipad presence and better than US over the counter priceing.

The BJP iPad version is, as the website says, a quarterly app, so it's not really the same as the print version at all and so far there has only been one issue (released in September) as far as I know.

I really like BJP. A good mix between interesting photography and gear that is actually relevant for serious and professional photographers. Whenever I'm in the UK or someone I know goes there I tell them to get me the mag but the subscription is just too expensive for me even though it would 'only' be £118 for me. If they ever get an affordable monthly iPad version of the print mag I'll consider getting an Pad.
