Cameras are among items that have today been banned from being carried onto planes in the UK as part of security measures following the thwarting of an alleged terrorist plot to blow up planes.
A spokeswoman for the British Airports Authority confirmed to AP that no camera of any type will be allowed in the cabin. She told us this morning. 'They would have to go in the hold.'
Only a limited number of items will be allowed to be carried as hand luggage, details of which are available on the Department of Transport website at http://www.dft.gov.uk

this has gotten RIDICULOUS!! since they are not liable for loss of things that are checked, what are we supposed to do? either not take the camera...or risk getting our gear stolen with no recourse?! nice.

Anybody know if the FAA is going to follow the same? I can pack everything up in a pelican case but will not check it in. The airlines will only cover 600.00 US dollars worth of equipment. One would have to wonder if they have to legally cover the entire kit when you are forced to check everything in. I may have to start carrying a printed inventory with me that has all stock numbers and serial numbers.

NYT article or WHY...

I can't imagine what else they'd be stripping if Thatcher were calling the shots.

Is there some exploding camera plot we don't know about? I thought that's what the x-ray machines were for. I mean, I thought.

I'm flying to the UK on Sunday 🙁

I think I'll take an old OM10 and buy film there. I'll then post the film to a lab in the UK and have the results posted back to Ireland.

This seems to be an extension of an incident a moth or so ago when police raided a house looking for a chemical device.

I am flying out of the UK next week. Bessa R and a couple of lenses carefully packed should be ok in the hold. Film can be bought (nearly) everywhere, but not necessarily in our favourite flavours.

Hopefully all this will be over soon.

I'm sure your camera insurance will cover any loss.I suspect people like me, carring lenses like this, are the real culprits.

I have a travel insurance which covers my cameras, iPod, Notebook etc.pp.
If some underpriviledged person wants to improve his standard of living with my camera and convinces me with a knife or gun to give up my equipment I'm happy to comply and get a new one when I'm save at home.

That's what I do anyways and I have it signed by german customs when I leave the country.

The only problem I see is ariving at my destination with no camera to shoot. :bang:

Another thing is film, processing on location sounds fine for most western or asian destinations, but thinking about Cuba I'd be hard pressed to find a place where I can get my slides processed.

That's not the point.. how ****ty would it be if you arrive at your vacation destination cameraless? Sure you'll get a new camera from insurance but no images from your vacation...

This news is ridiculous. I truly hope it is only a temporary measure..

Ridiculous? In the context of potential attacks resulting in the loss of thousands of lives, all one can think about is how it'll inconvenience us on a holiday?

It's not just cameras they've banned, it's every conceivable "useful" item of hand luggage most of us would pack on a long journey. The airport security personnel must be under immense pressure at the airports already, and having fewer items to check will at least make their jobs that little bit easier.

OK, let's all stop questioning the government, let them do as they say, they're always right. I mean, it's not like they've been seriously wrong on intelligence before, and never denied it and excused their mistakes. They are beyond reproach and we should defer our freedoms blindingly every single time they cry wolf. Sure, I mean, that worked for Stalin, why shouldn't it work for developed free countries?

Sorry mate, it was in reaction to this:

The concern appears to be electronic devices that could be used to trigger the liquid explosives. I know many on RFF are using cameras without even light meters. But a camera chassis could be hollowed out or modified.

Another country scratched from my travel list.

In the current world political climate, I expect the US to commence smart bombing Great Britain momentarily. Then an invasion, followed by a civil war. Better to stay away. 🙁

LOL, You'll get your brains blown out by the snipers before you even get a chance to aim with that lens..

we will have to show up at the airport naked with only a Zorki 4 in the main luggage bag that will go in the cargo hold.
