Brits Ban Cameras on Planes

In the current world political climate, I expect the US to commence smart bombing Great Britain momentarily. Then an invasion, followed by a civil war. Better to stay away. 🙁

probably start with canada first, it's a lot closer.

But how far will you go to eliminate every possible risk? I for one don't have a polycarbonate bubble with it's own failsafe energy, food, water, air, and waste disposal provisions...

I think it is all a conspiracy b/c people are taking too much stuff in their carry-on luggage 😉

I'd like to know more about this multi-pack detector proof cocktail they are talking about. I really don't think that is something your normal "Betty Crocker" home bomber would invent, that takes some R&D muscle. Does it not make any sound when it goes off either? So much for all the sniffer machines they just installed.

What is the terrorist fascination with airplanes?

Gonna be a lot of cameras at the pawn shops near the airport and where the handlers live.

If a handler will steal stuff, don't you think they might be able to do much worse stuff, like put things in?

I hope we do see the Dem's get in power, at least in the House in the fall. Having those mental midgets, especially if they are the DailyKos variety, with a little power, will show everyone that Rep. are the lesser of two evils.

Sign of the times, I'm afraid. But seriously, if there's a plane flying with no restrictions on what you can carry, and another with the restrictions we've learnt about today, I know which one I'd be travelling on. Putting my camera gear in the hold versus carrying it with me next to the arab with the liquid explosive...hmmm, tough one!:bang:

Just remember: the ban of small scissors and toenail clippers came to an end. And you can light up in an airplane as long as you're using matches from a matchbook. Still, no Zippos allowed in the cabin! 🙂

I guess I won't be flying off to the UK in the near future. I'm leaving for Bogotá, Colombia, tomorrow, though... and this time I'll fly light.

Would a change in power in the US affect British antiterrorist measures😕

With consumer electronics like cameras, computers, computer-based entertainment units, etc becoming more and more popular - and more and more sophisticated - it would be unrealistic to expect that any 'suspicious' items in cameras, etc would be identified by screening x-ray images.

Don't forget that we are talking about restricting what you are allowed to bring with you when you are travelling on a airborne vechicle along with hundreds of other people. Unless you live in fairyland you have to realize that there may be individuls that may want to harm you and that being confined in a machine 30,000 feet above air is not the best place to air your personal freedom speeches.

I am personally all for identifying what can be a threat on mass-transportation and once identified making sure that they are not brough onboard any such vehicle. I don't see this as restricting my personal freedom. I still have the freedom to buy my own plane or car and bring my cameras in there if I want to. I realize that with co-traveling comes risks that needs to be mitigated.

People could also get a Unicorn and hang their rights-banner from that as they gallop down the hills of oblivousness.

Last week I did read a article that the police is really concerned about homemade explosives. They get made with harmless stuff, so there is no effective control and the recipes are to be found in the internet.
It's a long way since I hace been a teenager, we mixed black powder, thermite and other stuff, recipes from a chemistry book and chemicals bought in the pharmacy. But the best (and most dangerous) explosive was mixed with a weedkiller and powdered sugar.......

Well, if somebody is going to bring weedkiller as a carry-on in an airplane, I'd be just a little suspicious. I can see why a ban would work: takes the "thinking" off the equation. Cost-effective too. Thank you, all who fought for our freedoms, we're all doing the best to keep your sacrifice by saying "we give up, let's ban things".

I'm guessing this'll increase drunken assaults on fight attendants as well. Imagine long flights with passengers unabale to entertain themselves with iPods, CD players, laptops, Gameboys, DVD players, cellphones ... though I guess unwrapped facial tissue and tampons could be entertaining for a while.

I think you may be overreacting just a tad. We have very little information at this point. I'm perfectly willing to have a photo-less trip if increased security measures mean my plane won't blow up in mid-air.

I'm the last person to trust any government blindly (particularly my current government) but the fact of the matter is that when faced with a threat such as this there are certain precautions that are only logical to take. Do I think my government has abused personal liberties in the name of the "war against terrorism?" Yes. Does that necessarily mean that all security precautions are abuses of my freedoms? No. Besides, where is it written that I have an inalienable right to take pictures when I go on vacation? That's fairly low on my list of priorities, or at least below the right to vote, to due process, etc.

To change the subject slightly, I'd feel more comfortable if we could talk about cameras and photography here and avoid making blanket statements about political parties or ethnic groups.

And I'm wondering if the mention of Stalin earlier in any way invokes a corollary to Godwin's Law.

**** lah.

Words cannot express my reaction to this recent turn of events. I leave for Bristol in about 1.5 months' time for a year's stay, and was hoping to bring over multiple cameras as well as my iBook. Very insecure about the prospect of transporting them with the rest of my checked-in luggage.

If you have someplace to ship your gear such as a hotel time the delivery for after your arrival. Or maybe you could have someone ship your gear to you once you arrive and are settled.
