One of the outbuildings at Quamby Estate, near Hagley in Tasmania.
Quamby was one of the early big estates (around 30,000 acres at one point) in the north of the colony, founded in the 1830's by Irish convict/political prisoner Richard Dry. The original property was a land grant from the colonial administration, and legend has it that the Governor made a bet that the Dry's could have whatever land the matriarch of the family, Anne, could ride around in a day. She hid horses around the valley and as it happens, managed to ride quite a long way... The Dry's first son, Sir Richard, would become the first native-born premier of Tasmania, and the first Tasmanian to be knighted.
Nowadays, Quamby only owns a few hundred acres, the rest having been sold mainly to commercial agricultural operations. It's a nice place for a wedding or a game of golf, and also happens to be my office
