Bummed Burned a Shutter Hole

just confirmed visually what a fresh developed film tells me: burned two holes in the shutter last week while sitting in the 10am sunshine with coffee, and shooting head shots of my wife with a 75mm, and the sun behind her...my comments then..."i gotta burn some film and get back to developing"
the mp3 is less than a year old, so maybe passport?...maybe not?

What are those two spots on the left side of the frame? It looks to me like the damage was done already.

Here's the first frame from the first roll of film through my Zorki. I guess maybe I'm not guilty of burning the hole. Luckily it's not so bad to be distracting. I looked at the whole roll & this was one of the more obvious examples.

At least you can get yours repaired with only a month to wait. I'm still trying to decide if I want to repair or deal with it. If I repair....how?

From what I understand, the US Passport warranty covers pretty much anything except theft - manufacturing defects and accidental damage alike.
 
It has to be the worst thing, last Easter I was camping and while out walking with the 21mm on, the sun zapped two holes in the curtain of my M6; I put three more rolls through it beforee I noticed. $500 later (inc a cla) not happy! Good luck with you passport application. Andrew.
 
Hi Andrew, and sorry to hear about the M6.
To the owner of the Zorki,it's a simple repair with a removable back camera if you have access to a scrap of curtain material (from one of those horrible Japanese SLR's of the eighties such as a Minolta XG1).
Cut a strip of the material about 23mm long and twice as wide as the diameter of the hole. Glue it to the back of the affected curtain from top to bottom of the film gate and of course covering the hole. Use a flexible contact glue applied to the cloth side of your patch, and press it firmly to the curtain using your fingers on both sides of the curtain, or make an anvil out of a flat piece of wood cut to about 23mm X 30mm.
Gluing a patch to the back of a curtain in this way will have a minimal effect on the lay of either curtain.
It would be cheaper to buy a new camera than to replace curtains in a Zorki 4.
 
There are only two kinds of Leica photographers: Those who have burned a hole in the shutter, and those who will. I have been lucky: no holes in 50+ years of Leica photography. Knock on wood. My number may be next.
 
Crack open a Contax / kiev shutter instead ?
Must say , I will take a lot more care now - I had no idea how common a burning desire to use a Leica can be !

My shooting habits will have me burning holes on a regular basis. Only one more reason why I'm sticking with the P.

I didn't think it was possible to do this with a 75. I can't even get my Elmar to warm a spot on my hand. Nor can I get any warmth out of a 25/4.
