Busch 23C 6x9

I have the Busch model that has a lens board with four screws holding it in and not the model with lens board slide locks for easy removal. The lens is the stock 101mm. This camera does not have cams for different focal lengths like some others. My question is what if I want to change the lens from the original to the same, similar, focal length but a modern one?

The problem I see might be the 101mm size. The camera is set up specifically for that focal length. All of the scales and Kalart too. I know I can use gone ground glass to focus. Is there a modern lens that will work?

Your Model C is likely the most common style, perhaps first available shortly after the end of the war, advertised and first sold by (if not before) 1946. An optional top mounted RF, VueFocus by American Bolex, became available in late '48. About that same time, the lens board retention system changed to the style offered on the 4x5 Model D (two face screws at the bottom, perpendicular/edge pining thumbscrew from top edge).

Probably the best source of information is the Graflex.org site. The 101 mm f/4.5 Ektar lens was (and probably still is) considered the best of its type. Adjustment of the Kalart can be tedious but instructions are in the DIY section. The Help leads to a message board which includes a section on "other" brands.

I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss any of the Kodak Ektar lens . I have 3 (Ektars) of different focal lengths for my Busch Pressman D and another on
my Medalist 1, not too sure how much of an improvement you'd expect from changing it out ? In a word, Kodak made some fine lenses. Peter

Thank you all,

I took a look and the lens, which I forgot the brand, and it is an optar. I'll look through my lenses and see if I still have the Ektar 101 I bought later for something else. I do have a Schneider Symmar 100 mm lens in a Copal shutter. That would be a step up from the Optar. The Ektar would be the preferred choice. I have a 10" and the great 14" Ektar. Also an 8 1/4 (?) Ektar.
