"But this photographer did this with just this..."

I'm 22 this year and I'm glad I came to the same conclusion as what kiev4a had said in his previous post. That was the reason I decided that though the 70's RFs were good, I needed something reliable.

OK, as I am one of these midnless immature retards from the chat that Stephanie refers, I'd like to clarify a few things.

That channel is not a collectors hideout but more an association of people who like to actually shoot, film or digital, but *shoot*. Steph is a frequent there, and we all heard more than once about her shifting plans of equipment purchases in order to imrove her photography.

On one such recent occasion, me (and some other people) have suggested that she could as well start with mastering her current collection, and that great progress in photography can be done without wideangle lens. That it is easy to find a flaw or incompleteness in any camera system and one risks to end up permanently chasing ultimate camera rather than take shots.

So before am gone too bitter, let me conclude:

1. This was my opinion, expressed in a public chatroom, I stand by it, it wasn't ill-meaning and I feel no need to apologize for it, to Stephanie or anyone else.

2. According to the logs (I left the channel earlier) Stephanie wasn't kicked off the channel: "Stephanie Quit with message ("leaving"). 06:33:34"

Keep the Nikon FE and 50mm F1.4 if you can swing it. Typically stuff goes on Ebay for 1/2 to 1/3 of what KEH tries to get for EX and better stuff. Their Bargain grade equipment is a little more competitive. BUT, you can pick up lenses for the FE really cheap. It can use the older Non-AI lenses in stop-down metering mode. The newer Nikons cannot use them. They go WAY-CHEAP these days, about 1/10th of what an RF lens will run.

Nikon 300mm F4.5 lens for $70! Which One? I had both the Nikkor-H 300mm F4.5 and Nikkor 300mm F4.5 ED-IF at the same time. Not much difference between them, I sold the ED lens. ED stands for EXTRA-Dollars. If you have the 300mm F4.5 Nikkor-P, it is not quite as good optically but is not common, and is more collectible.

So Stephanie, save the pennies (as Joe does), use the FE, keep up the job-hunting. Be patient, good things come to those who wait. See all the Fatherly Advice?

Nikon Ftn Photomic, 300mm F4.5 Nikkor-H, Wide-Open.
And do not waste your money on ED lenses.

Clarification - Photos matter

Clarification - Photos matter

Hi, as a frequent user of the chatroom that Stephanie refers to I would like to clarify a few things for the record.

1. Stephanie has to my knowledge never been kicked from the chatroom and I don't think anyone has ever hinted in that direction. Any accusations of such does not compute.

2. Stephanie is not the only camera collector in the chatroom, and people all care about their gear. But the majority is concerned with one thing: _photos_. The chatroom is not 'camerageeeks' or 'cameracollectors' or 'GAS', but 'photogeeks'/'photography'. We like to discuss cameras, gear and whatnot as much as as the next photographer, but it is about photos and photography in the end.

3. The majority of the chatroom uses SLRs of all price classes, brands and mounts, digital or film, as everyday cameras, either as professionals, amateurs or hobbyists. Several chatroom members also own and use rangefinders, including myself. Several chatroom members also own and use various medium format cameras. Some also own digital compacts/p&s, but I can't think of anyone that uses them as anything but backup cameras. But to be honest, at the end of the day, it's the photos you produce with the cameras that matter.

4. Some members have strong opinions, as with all other subcultures of society, but photography is lucky in that respect because one can ask for photos to back up strong claims. Many sites on the web seem to give more credibility to a person's claims if he owns this and that legendary/hyped camera, if he or she owns so and so much L-glass, etc. Photos matter. Whether you focused with a rangefinder, an SLR or you were just lucky doesn't matter.

5. We also respect and cherish that photography is fun. It is actually fun to shoot, use ones eyes and do the work needed to produce a good photo.

6. We find it sad when a camera is unused on a shelf, even more sad if a dozen cameras rot away on a shelf. Ever seen the projects where impoverished kids are given cameras to go shoot and come back with wonderful photos? Photos matter.

That said, Stephanie and everyone else is always welcome, whether they shoot with pinhole cameras, lomos, D2X, 1DsMk2, F6, leicas, large format and whatnot. We focus on the photos you make with your camera. Happy shooting folks.

(Yeah, I have GAS as well, most of us do 🙂

When I started out on photographic forums I once told somebody to stop equipment-agonizing and pixelpeeping and to start taking pictures of something else than brick walls and tape-measures. The reaction to that statement (no it was not this forum, nor another one where I am active) taught me to bite my tongue rather than be that blunt. Of course there is a truth in what you say, but it disregards the thrill of having something new that opens up (at least in one's mind) endless vista's of new possibilities. And this feeling may well give new impulses to creativity. GAS is HEAVEN !

> JLW asked "Just out of curiosity, what 50mm f/2 Nikon lens goes for $200 used?"

For the SLR's, the 5cm F2 Nikkor-S will fetch this amount! Look for a Nikkorex F on Ebay, they often come with them and go cheap. My early 5cm F2 is a "Pat Pending" lens, but missed being a "tick-Mark" lens by a few hundred units. Those go for a LOT on the collector's market. Bought my Nikkor-S and the Nikkorex for $50, sold the body. The RF 5cm F2 RF lenses will go in that range, especially in LTM.

jaapv, I don't have a problem when people disagree with my opinion. I do have an issue though when rather than addressing me directly they take the words out of context and plant it into a sympathise-me-vs-them post to generally uninformed audience.

The channel in question is #photography on irc.freenode.net, an IRC network (accessible using special client software like XChat or mIRC). The channel logs are available on the web: http://meme.b9.com/cview.html?channel=photogeeks&date=050801

Scroll down to 16:11:39 and see what this fuss is all about.

Somehow I met with similar disdain from people like my parents to my friends. All along I've only fixed rangefinders and until only very recently, I manage to acquire a set of R2 with a Skopar 35/2.5P I for USD$575. I would consider it a real bargain but people around me have been telling me about how I shouldn't spend money anymore on gear since I have so much already. The reason I bought the kit was to really get the "look" I want from my photos with the availability of my unique LTM lenses.

Everyone questions me on the sensibility of spending money on new gear but nobody has asked me why did I want to but them. It saddens me greatly when the very people who ask these questions are people who're suppose to be close to you and all they care about is the you shoud spend less money.

Enough of a rant for the day...

I must agree with your statement! For me, the person who questioned my sanity for acquiring 3 Bessa R2, 2 Ultron 35mm/1.7, a Color Skopar 35mm/2.5 PII and a APO-Lanthar 90mm/3.5 is my wife! She cannot understand why I need all these gear to produce some B&W photos, which I seldom print anyway! I guess she will never understand that photography is not just producing good shots but also the joy of operating the equipment and admiring the construction and form of good photographic equipment! 😛
