Four failed Leica M8's in an Arctic expedition. I think 2 of the cameras even failed before they even left Buenos Aries. This is a scarey prospect considering it cost 5k for the camera. The Canon 1ds Mark 2's died in the rain and started to work after drying out. The Leica camera could not even work to get out of the airport.


If the Leica M8 is marketed as a pro camera. I feel sorry for those pros.

If I were to discuss the issue with the OP, which I will not ,I will limit my response to this ....based on his conclusions, I would NEVER buy a CANON because of it's "50% failure rate".

I am a lifelong NIKON photographer and will buy an M8 this year for my own uses...certainly not for going to freaking Anartica, which would call for appropriate preparation. The LL article does nothing but show how unprepared they were.

In MHO, this is a trolling thread that should be locked.

Exactly!! Not only the trolling title, but some of the posts... This one falls well within the margins set by "Stop it Now" I'm surprised the moderators let is go on so long.... Moderators, please, let this one disappear from my screen into cyberlimbo, where it so richly deserves to be.

It is interesting how censorship is condamned just to be invoked it when one is the censor...
Is it this really a trolling thread? If you are considering (as I am, please, look the other thread in which I asked for top class digital rangefinders) buying a 5,000 US$ camera and this involves ordering it from another Country (no Leica import to Colombia where I live) don't you want to know of every possible fault the camera might have? If you do take pictures in extreme environment (Colombia has a large portion of the Amazon as well as other interesting and unique places, like the "paramo" biome all of which are not dificult to access, are incredibly beautiful place to visit and...have heavy rain) and it might appear from news that the camera you are considering buying might be particularly sensitive to these conditions don't you want to know how much true is in the news?
Is it this not more in topic than the "Do you smoke?", "What do you drive?", "How old are you?"
threads? If you already have an M8 and are happy with it you do not need to read this but, please, let other people speak of whatever they feel is interesting and useful to them.
Reading this mailing list should be almost as relaxing as a night in the darkroom...

I think we have to keep an eye on the goal to have a spirited debate and not an argument or to make personal attacks. Keep in mind too that some of these discussions are not new or timely to everyone. Most at this time have taken place a number of times before, specifically this frozen camera in the arctic thing has been around for a little while. Just a statement for understanding that some will, and others will not, like to keep kicking the poor old horse.

That's certainly a valid point and I don't think anybody wants to censor negative comments about the M8 from owners/users. I have my reasons for not being in a rush to buy an M8, but I'm upfront that I don't own one and don't claim any authority to dissuade others from buying, or call into question the motives of those that do own them hoping to provoke a defensive retaliation. Likewise I expect the same courtesy in return, i.e. no patronizing remarks to the effect I haven't bought an M8 because my standards are lower than theirs or my eye isn't as discerning. It's ok to call me cheap though, I'll cop to that one, I'm tighter than bark on a tree and proud of it 😀

For sure nothing silly except for botched facts. Indeed you did post the link so others could check. Good job. But if you expected agreement with your thoughts on unresolved issues, surely you could have expected disagreement too. And no big deal that there was. We all have our likes and dislikes. If you posted even real issues with my Mamiya Super Press 23 I would probably have jumped to the defense and tried to minimize them. Maybe unsuccessfully. 😀

I'd have jumped in to help on THAT one. 🙂

(just took mine out for a couple packs of Polaroid- the 100mm f/2.8 vignettes, but the pictures are gorgeous. Infinitely better than Polaroid from the M8)

A valid argument.
All I can say is that the " defective/dying M8" threads on LUF have completely petered out over the last few months, that a number of cameras have been in extremely adverse circumstances -Namib desert, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. I took mine sailing in hot and very humid salt air in the Bahamas for a week. Everything was soaked, but the M8 didn't flinch - and so forth. It may be time to start thinking -carefully- that the M8 maybe turns out to be the rugged tool everyone wants it to be after all. As a " gamma tester" , I am happy <touch wood> that things seem to be moving in the right direction. Another good sign is that we see daily new arrivals on the forums, many of them professional or advanced photographers and most seem to be happy. 🙂
